The Last of Us: Is Season 3 the Final Chapter?

HBO is signaling that The Last of Us might be reaching its conclusion. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, recently suggested that Season 3 could be the last for the critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama. This comes as showrunner Craig Mazin is already mapping out the final arc of the story.

The announcement of a third season came surprisingly early, back in April 2025, even before Season 2 had aired. Mazin is set to lead the creative direction solo following Neil Druckmann’s step back from co-showrunning duties. Bloys confirmed in an interview with Radio Times that Season 3, which will heavily feature Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), is currently envisioned as the series’ finale.

“I believe that’s where Craig is thinking,” Bloys stated. “We always leave the door open, but I believe that’s where he is thinking.” This potential ending would free up Mazin to focus on other projects, most notably a television adaptation of the popular role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate.

Baldur’s Gate: Mazin’s Next Adventure

Bloys emphasized his enthusiasm for any project Mazin pursues. “Anything that Craig is interested in, I’m interested in,” he said. While Mazin is currently deeply involved in Season 3 of The Last of Us, Baldur’s Gate has been a passion project he brought to HBO. Discussions are underway, but Mazin will prioritize completing The Last of Us before fully dedicating himself to the new adaptation.

Unlike a direct adaptation of a specific Baldur’s Gate game, Mazin’s series is reportedly a sequel, taking place immediately after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. This offers a fresh perspective within the established Dungeons & Dragons universe. You can learn more about the Baldur’s Gate universe here.

What to Expect from The Last of Us Season 3

Filming for the third season began in March 2026, with a projected release date in 2027. Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced are confirmed to return as Ellie and Dina, respectively. Joining the cast are Jason Ritter, Patrick Wilson, Clea DuVall, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (replacing Danny Ramirez as Manny due to scheduling conflicts).

Season 2 left viewers on a gripping cliffhanger, with Ellie’s fate uncertain after a harrowing confrontation with Abby. The upcoming season promises to be emotionally charged and action-packed, bringing a potential close to this beloved story.
