Aaron Taylor-Johnson Takes the Lead in ‘Enigma Variations’
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for his roles in 28 Years Later and Nosferatu, is set to headline Enigma Variations, a limited series greenlit by Netflix. This project is based on the bestselling novel by André Aciman, the author of Call Me By Your Name. The casting change comes as Taylor-Johnson replaces Jeremy Allen White, who was originally attached to star.
A Story of Love, Identity, and Modern Relationships
Written by Amanda Kate Shuman (The Wheel of Time) and directed by Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound), Enigma Variations centers on Paul, portrayed by Taylor-Johnson. The series will explore Paul’s life over ten transformative years, shaped by the lovers who both ignite and unravel him. It promises to be an intimate and sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and the complexities of modern love.
The series delves into the question of finding “the one” in a world brimming with endless possibilities. Like the source material, the show will portray Paul as sexually fluid, navigating relationships with both male and female partners. This nuanced exploration of identity is a key element of Aciman’s work and is expected to be central to the series.
Behind the Scenes
Amanda Kate Shuman serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Oliver Hermanus. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer from Media Res, André Aciman, and Monica Levinson (Love Story: JFK Jr. And Carolyn Bessette) also executive produce. Media Res is the studio behind the project.
Enigma Variations was initially set up at Netflix over a year ago with Jeremy Allen White attached. Following White’s departure at the end of 2025, a search for a replacement began, ultimately leading to Taylor-Johnson’s involvement.
