The Amazing Digital Circus: Finale Shatters Presales, Heads to 1,800+ Theaters
The highly anticipated finale of the hit animated series, The Amazing Digital Circus, is generating massive buzz and breaking presale records. In just four days, the theatrical event has amassed a staggering $5 million in ticket sales, exceeding even the previous record holder, “Christmas With The Chosen,” which earned $3 million in 2023.
This surge in demand mirrors the success of “Iron Lung,” the feature film debut of YouTuber Markiplier, which captivated audiences and prompted widespread theatrical screenings earlier this year. Now, it’s The Amazing Digital Circus’s turn to bring the online fandom to the big screen.
From YouTube Sensation to Theatrical Release
Glitch, the indie animation distributor behind The Amazing Digital Circus, announced last Friday that Episodes 8 and the upcoming finale would be combined into a theatrical event distributed by Fathom. The event will be shown in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and Japan starting June 5th, two weeks before the finale’s release on YouTube.
The initial plan was a limited four-day engagement in 900 theaters. However, the overwhelming response from fans and theater owners has led Fathom to expand the release to a minimum of 1,800 theaters for two weeks, coinciding with the YouTube premiere. Theater owners, attending CinemaCon in Las Vegas, are actively seeking to add the film to their summer schedules, potentially increasing the theater count even further.
“We’ve had new people calling us to add the film to their circuits, and the ones who already had it are asking to book more showtimes,” stated Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom. He credits Glitch for embracing the theatrical experience and his team for recognizing the series’ dedicated fanbase, similar to the success of “The Chosen.”
A Darkly Comedic World Captivates Millions
Created by Gooseworx, a British-American animator, artist, and composer, The Amazing Digital Circus premiered on YouTube in October 2023 and has since garnered over 425 million views. The series is a psychological dark comedy inspired by Harlan Ellison’s chilling sci-fi horror short story, “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.”
The story follows six individuals transformed into cartoonish characters trapped within a virtual world governed by Caine, a manic AI ringmaster. The newest arrival, Pomni, an accountant-turned-jester, struggles to maintain unity among her companions as they navigate a world filled with absurdity and horror.
Episode 8 ended on a dramatic cliffhanger, with Caine’s accidental deletion plunging the Digital Circus into chaos. The finale promises to explore the group’s desperate situation as they face an increasingly hopeless predicament.
Facing Major Studio Competition
The Amazing Digital Circus will debut alongside major studio releases like Amazon MGM’s “Masters of the Universe,” Paramount’s “Scary Movie” revival, and Lionsgate’s “Power Ballad.” Its second week will coincide with the release of Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi film, “Disclosure Day.”
However, the fact that this independently animated series, with a fraction of the budget of these blockbusters, is securing a wide theatrical release alongside such prominent films highlights a significant shift in the industry. Exhibitors are recognizing the potential of specialty releases fueled by passionate online communities. You can learn more about the evolving landscape of film distribution at TheWrap.
