Taylor Dearden: From ‘The Pitt’ ER to Real-Life Emergency Response
Taylor Dearden, known for her compelling portrayal of Dr. Melissa “Mel” King on the HBO Max drama “The Pitt,” embodies a natural instinct to help others – a trait that extends far beyond the television screen. The 33-year-old actress recently shared a remarkable story demonstrating how her immersive preparation for the role almost led to a real-life medical intervention.
While on a family vacation with her father, acclaimed actor Bryan Cranston (“Malcolm in the Middle”), Dearden found herself responding to a critical situation. Cranston recounted the incident on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on April 9th, detailing how Dearden immediately sprang into action when a man began choking in a restaurant.
In a segment aired on TODAY on April 15th, Dearden explained the experience. “It was over the holidays, and there was a man choking in the restaurant we were in,” she told Carson Daly. “It’s also very much an ADHD thing to be very good in emergencies, but we end up running towards it and not really knowing why we’re there now.”
Fortunately, the man regained his breath just as Dearden reached him. “I just sprinted towards him. I just kind of stood there like this and I had nothing to do. He was fine, but it was close, so close. I just stood waiting for my line that never came,” Dearden recounted with a touch of humour.
Cranston and his wife, actor Robin Dearden, were amazed by their daughter’s immediate and selfless response. “She was running toward him and just as she’s getting to him, he caught his breath and started breathing,” Cranston said. “He was OK, and she told him, ‘Just take your time, take it slow.’ And we’re going, ‘Oh my God, we finally have a doctor in the family!’”
Representing Authenticity On and Off Screen
Dearden’s character, Dr. King, is admired for her calm demeanor and competence under pressure. What’s particularly significant is that Dearden also identifies as neurodivergent, bringing a layer of authenticity to her performance. “I think as someone who’s neurodivergent myself, I feel very proud to represent something that feels true, real,” she shared.
What’s Next for ‘The Pitt’?
As Season 2 of “The Pitt” nears its finale (airing April 16th), viewers are left on the edge of their seats, with the fate of several characters hanging in the balance during a particularly grueling July 4th shift. The show has already been renewed for a third season, promising more dramatic storylines and cliffhangers.
Dearden hinted at a satisfying, yet complex, conclusion to the current season. “I was curious, and I just saw it recently,” she said about the finale. “I think it will hopefully satisfy a lot of questions and also ask a lot of new ones because I think ‘The Pitt’ does a great job with cliffhangers and constantly wanting more.”
