Stranger Things: Beyond the Finale – What Does the Future Hold?

The epic conclusion of Stranger Things Season 5 left fans both emotionally drained and eager for more. While the main storyline reached a satisfying close, the franchise is far from over. With several spin-offs in development, the world of Hawkins, Indiana, continues to expand. The first foray into this expanded universe, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, is set to premiere this month, bridging the gap between Seasons 2 and 3.

But is Tales from ’85 a standalone adventure, or the first chapter in a longer narrative? Showrunner Eric Robles recently shed some light on the potential for future seasons. In an interview with MovieWeb, Robles revealed a wealth of ideas, stating, “Look, I have it in my head. If all the guardrails were off, and you and I can have a real one-on-one, man, I can tell you, I know where this would go.”

However, the ultimate decision rests with Netflix and, crucially, the fans. “It’s Netflix. It’s the fans. People, do they want more? That really is always the determining factor,” Robles explained. “But if you ask me, do I know where this would go? I know exactly where this would go. I know exactly where I want it to go.” He’s spent considerable time immersed in the Stranger Things universe and has a clear vision for where the story could evolve, seamlessly connecting back to the events of Season 3.

An Organic Expansion of the Stranger Things Universe

The Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, have long maintained a clear understanding of the story’s overall arc. Tales from ’85, however, represents a different approach – an experiment in expanding the lore. Robles emphasized that the animated spin-off isn’t essential to understanding the core narrative. “When I got involved in development, they were in post-production on Season 4. So it’s a lot of whether the fans are going to care about this or not, but it’s not like it was the master plan,” he clarified. “It starts happening organically, and that’s what art is. Storytelling art, it’s just organic.”

This organic development allows Tales from ’85 to carve its own identity. The animation style and focus on younger characters create a more accessible entry point for a wider audience, while still retaining the supernatural thrills that define Stranger Things. Robles described the creative freedom given to him: “What we’re giving you is between Seasons 2 and 3. Now, your mission, your assignment, is to freeze that moment in time in winter, and now create your own math, your own science within the space. But it can’t interfere with this thing.”

What to Expect from ‘Tales from ’85’ and Beyond

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 promises a harsh winter and a fresh wave of supernatural threats for the beloved Hawkins crew. Beyond this animated series, reports suggest a live-action spin-off is also in the works, spearheaded by the Duffer Brothers, though details remain closely guarded. The future of the Stranger Things franchise is brimming with possibilities, and it all hinges on the continued enthusiasm of its dedicated fanbase.

The success of Tales from ’85 will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping what comes next. Will we see more seasons of the animated series? Will the live-action spin-off materialize? Only time – and the fans – will tell.
