Stephen Colbert Embarks on a Middle-earth Adventure: A New Lord of the Rings Film
Stephen Colbert, beloved host of The Late Show, is trading in his desk for a quill and parchment, embarking on a dream project: adapting a new Lord of the Rings movie for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. This exciting development comes as Colbert prepares to sign off from his late-night duties on May 21st.
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past – A Return to Familiar Lands
Tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, the film will be a collaborative effort. Colbert will be joined by Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee in writing the screenplay, alongside the legendary Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Boyens – the creative forces behind the original New Line franchise. This project promises a deep reverence for Tolkien’s work, blending faithfulness to the source material with the cinematic legacy already established.
Delving into ‘Fogs on the Barrow-downs’ and the Enigmatic Tom Bombadil
Colbert revealed that the film will draw inspiration from “Fogs on the Barrow-downs,” the eighth chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring. This section sees the Hobbits ensnared by a Barrow-wight within an unnatural fog. Notably, the adaptation will also feature Tom Bombadil, a fan-favorite character previously omitted from the theatrical films. The story will span chapters three through eight of Tolkien’s seminal work.
A New Generation of Heroes and Secrets Unveiled
Set 14 years after Frodo’s departure, Shadow of the Past will follow Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace the initial steps of their epic journey. However, the narrative will also introduce a compelling new storyline centered around Elanor, Sam’s daughter, who uncovers a long-buried secret that threatens to rewrite the history of the War of the Ring. As Colbert explained to Peter Jackson, the goal is to create something “completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies.”
The Future of Middle-earth on Screen
This announcement arrives alongside news of another upcoming Lord of the Rings film, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis and slated for release on December 17, 2027. The combined success of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit series, having grossed over $5.9 billion worldwide, demonstrates the enduring appeal of Tolkien’s world.
Colbert’s lifelong passion for Lord of the Rings is well-documented, having hosted panels at Comic-Con dedicated to both the Amazon series and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. The irony of the situation isn’t lost on anyone, as Colbert’s departure from Paramount will ultimately lead him back into business with them through their impending acquisition of Warner Bros.

While some speculate about the suitability of “Fogs on the Barrow-downs” for a feature-length film, suggesting it might be better suited for a television special, the project’s ambition and the involvement of such esteemed creative minds promise a captivating addition to the Lord of the Rings canon.
