Shogakukan Suspends ‘Joujin Kamen’ Manga Distribution
Japanese publishing giant Shogakukan has suspended the distribution and shipment of Joujin Kamen (Ordinary Man Mask) manga due to serious concerns regarding the engagement of its original author. The decision comes after revelations linking the author, Hajime Ichiro, to past legal issues and a previous manga cancellation.
The Author’s Identity and Past Issues
Hajime Ichiro has been identified as Yamamoto Shoichi, the creator of Daten Sakusen. In 2020, following Yamamoto’s arrest, summary indictment, and subsequent fine, Shogakukan discontinued the serialization of Daten Sakusen. Despite this, in 2022, the Manga One editorial department initiated a new serialization, Ordinary Man Mask, under the name Hajime Ichiro.
Shogakukan has publicly stated that, in retrospect, engaging the author under his original creator status was a significant oversight. The company has issued a sincere apology to all affected parties, including readers, illustrator Eri Tsuruyoshi, contributing writers, and others involved in the project.
Editorial Department’s Response and Apology
The Manga One editorial department acknowledges a failure in its verification process and expresses deep regret for the concern and inconvenience caused. They emphasize taking full responsibility for this serious lapse in judgment.
“We would like to express our sincere apologies for the significant concern and inconvenience this matter has caused our readers, the illustrator of ‘Joujin Kamen,’ Eri Tsuruyoshi, the contributing writers, and all other involved parties,” stated the Manga One Editorial Department.
Involvement in Civil Settlement Negotiations
Shogakukan clarified its position regarding the ongoing civil lawsuit between Mr. Yamamoto and the complainant. While the editorial department has no intention of becoming directly involved, an editor participated in a group chat on a messaging app at the request of both parties. Prior to participation, conditions were discussed. The editor advised both parties to seek legal counsel and create a notarized document.
However, Shogakukan admits to an inadequate understanding of the situation’s gravity and inappropriate handling of the information. They are committed to preventing similar incidents in the future.
Broader Context: Copyright Enforcement in Japan
This incident occurs within a larger context of increased scrutiny regarding copyright infringement in the Japanese manga industry. Recently, major publishers like Kodansha, KADOKAWA, Shueisha, and Shogakukan won a significant copyright infringement lawsuit, highlighting the industry’s efforts to protect intellectual property.
