Shen Yun Performance in Toronto Cancelled Following Bomb Threat
A scheduled performance of Shen Yun at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in downtown Toronto was abruptly cancelled on Sunday, March 29, 2026, following a reported bomb threat. The 2 p.m. show was called off after Toronto police received a call around 1:15 p.m. regarding the potential danger.
Police Investigation and Initial Findings
According to Const. Stephanie Miceli of the Toronto Police Service, officers investigated the threat and determined it appeared to be unfounded. However, the decision to cancel the performance was made by the organizers of the classical Chinese dance and music show, the Falun Dafa Association of Toronto (FDAT).
A Pattern of Threats
FDAT issued an apology to patrons, explaining that the theatre received an email containing the bomb threat. Joel Chipkar, representing FDAT, stated that the theatre’s general manager made the final call to cancel. This incident, unfortunately, isn’t isolated. FDAT reports receiving over 150 similar threatening emails targeting theatres hosting Shen Yun performances globally over the past two years.
“All incidents were reported to the police and after thorough police searches they were all determined to be hoaxes,” FDAT stated. “Authorities have traced the origin of some of these messages to China.”
Allegations of CCP Interference
FDAT strongly believes these threats are part of a deliberate campaign by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to disrupt Shen Yun performances. The organization asserts that Shen Yun’s portrayal of traditional Chinese culture – specifically, life before communism – and its depiction of the persecution faced by individuals in modern China, are perceived as a threat by the CCP regime. This perspective is rooted in Shen Yun’s artistic expression, which challenges the CCP’s narrative.
“Shen Yun portrays traditional Chinese culture before communism, as well as the reality of life under tyranny in China today–and this scares Beijing,” FDAT explained. They expressed gratitude for the Canadian government’s support of artistic freedom and the Four Seasons Centre’s prioritization of safety.
Falun Gong and Shen Yun
Shen Yun’s website notes that many of its performers practice Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been severely persecuted by the CCP since 1999. The performances often incorporate stories reflecting the experiences of Falun Gong practitioners, highlighting the human rights abuses they face. This inclusion is a direct challenge to the CCP’s censorship and control.
Enhanced Security Measures
For the remaining performances this week, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts will implement enhanced security measures, including K-9 sweeps before each show, to ensure the safety of attendees and prevent further disruptions. FDAT expressed their gratitude for the public’s patience and understanding, encouraging them to still experience the show.
Ticket Options for Cancelled Performance
Ticketholders for the cancelled performance have the option to exchange their tickets for another Toronto show this week or use them for next year’s Shen Yun performances at any theatre in the Greater Toronto Area. The investigation remains ongoing.
