Shawn Hatosy: A Career on the Rise
Shawn Hatosy is experiencing a remarkable career moment. With a groundbreaking first-ever Emmy win for his work on “The Pitt” coinciding with the revival of his acclaimed series “Southland” on Netflix, and a starring role in the highly anticipated sequel “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” the 50-year-old actor has plenty to celebrate.
“I’m certainly enjoying a lot of different characters right now,” Hatosy shared in a recent Zoom interview. “I’d say that ‘Ready or Not’ may not have happened if it weren’t for ‘The Pitt.’ So, yeah, it’s an exciting time. Being on Netflix is fantastic, and finding a new audience for ‘Southland’ is incredibly rewarding.”
‘Southland’: A Defining Moment?
When asked if he considers “Southland,” the gritty drama about Los Angeles police officers, his big break, Hatosy offered a nuanced perspective. “I had a pretty busy movie career right out of high school. A career happens in stages. I was immersed in the world of teen movies – and that eventually faded. Then came the golden age of basic cable TV – and that exploded. Then ‘Southland’ – and that, too, came to an end.”
He continued, “You’re always wondering if middle age will be the end of the line. Certainly, after the actors’ strike, I was going through a challenging time. But then John Wells, with whom I’ve collaborated on five shows, and ‘The Pitt’ came along.”
The Unexpected Success of ‘The Pitt’
Hatosy initially signed on for just one scene in the first episode of “The Pitt.” He had no idea it would become a career-altering role. “When ‘The Pitt’ landed, it was to be just one scene in the first episode. I had no idea what it was going to turn into. But when that blew up it changed my life. Now, all of a sudden, there are many acting opportunities. So you just never know.” His portrayal of Dr. Jack Abbot, the charismatic and sometimes shirtless attending physician, earned him a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
‘Ready or Not 2’: A Hilarious and Disturbing Ride
Regarding “Ready or Not 2,” Hatosy admitted he hadn’t seen the original 2019 film but was immediately drawn in by the screenplay. “It’s just hilarious. Disturbing. So many things in one movie.” He plays Titus Danforth, a member of a wealthy and powerful Satanic cult, closely connected to his twin sister Ursula (Sarah Michelle Gellar). The film once again follows Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving) as she fights for her life, now with her younger sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) by her side.
“Titus is somebody who comes from wealth and is in a family that has power. It’s not hard to decide who to model this character after – there are plenty of options out there right now,” Hatosy observed. “I think he struggles to find his identity. He’s not an independent guy. Decisions are made for him by his father (iconic horror director David Cronenberg) and his sister. We see what independence looks like for him. How he chases that power that’s within his reach. How he’ll do anything for it.”
Shawn Hatosy’s journey is a testament to resilience, talent, and the unpredictable nature of a career in Hollywood. With a diverse range of roles and a recent Emmy win, he’s proving that his best work may still be ahead.
