Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Reflect on Catherine O’Hara’s Impact on ‘The Studio’

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are opening up about the profound impact of Catherine O’Hara’s passing and how the second season of their Apple TV+ comedy, The Studio, will acknowledge her absence. In a recent interview with The Times, the duo discussed the challenges of continuing the show without O’Hara, who played the pivotal role of Patty Leigh.

Goldberg described the situation as “an unbelievable challenge,” particularly as O’Hara’s character was integral to the planned storyline for season two. He emphasized that O’Hara was “the anchor” of the series, and her loss has sent “shock waves” throughout the entire season.

Rogen echoed Goldberg’s sentiments, stating, “If anything we’re acknowledging the idea that we are a little anchorless.” However, he also highlighted the importance of reflecting real-life experiences, adding, “That is a part of life and what we all experience. And so while we try to not dwell too much on heavy themes in this show, they will be there in this second season. We are not ignoring it.”

A Legacy Remembered

Catherine O’Hara, best known for her iconic role in Beetlejuice and Schitt’s Creek, passed away on January 30th at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness at the age of 71. Her death prompted an outpouring of grief from the cast, crew, and producers of The Studio, who released a joint statement expressing their heartbreak.

O’Hara’s portrayal of movie executive Patty Leigh in The Studio earned her critical acclaim, including a 2025 Emmy nomination and a 2026 Golden Globe nod for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She ultimately won the Actor Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in 2026, with Rogen accepting the award on her behalf.

During awards season, Rogen and Goldberg consistently paid tribute to O’Hara. After winning the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for a Comedy Series, Rogen shared, “Honestly, there’s no one we wish we could thank in person at this moment more than we would love to thank Catherine O’Hara.” Goldberg added, “We grew up in Canada, and she is and was quite literally our idol since we were children.”

The directors’ dedication to honoring O’Hara’s memory underscores the deep respect and affection they held for the late actress, promising a season of The Studio that will both entertain and pay tribute to a beloved icon.
