Tom Tucker, the news guy, was always the easiest character of all to do for some reason,” he explained. “I guess it was because everything is delivered in that newsy [deadpan tone of] ‘this is all very formal, and everything is 100% under control, and this is what’s going on.’”
He further elaborated that Tom Tucker’s voice was inspired by “a cigarette spokesman from the 1940s commercials,” adding a layer of nostalgic influence to the character’s delivery. Tucker’s frequent appearances on Family Guy, delivering absurd news reports alongside his exasperated co-anchor Diane Simmons, have cemented him as a comedic staple.
The Vocal Marathon: Stewie, Peter, and Brian
While Tom Tucker proved surprisingly simple, other characters presented significant challenges. MacFarlane identified Stewie and Brian as the most demanding. “Just as far as sheer exhaustion, Stewie was definitely at the top of the list. I was usually red in the face after I got done with Stewie scenes,” he admitted. Stewie’s high-energy, often manic delivery clearly takes a toll.
Brian Griffin also posed a unique hurdle. Unlike the exaggerated voices of Peter and Stewie, Brian’s voice is a subtle alteration of MacFarlane’s own. “There was no silly voice to hide behind. You know, Brian’s voice is slightly altered, but essentially my own voice,” MacFarlane explained. Delivering emotional or serious lines in his natural voice, rather than relying on a comedic persona, proved to be a considerable acting challenge. As the closest thing to a voice of reason within the Griffin family, Brian often carries the weight of the show’s more poignant moments.
