Project Hail Mary: A Stellar Success for Amazon MGM?

Last weekend saw a double win for those behind the Rocky franchise, with Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler both taking home Oscars. But a new contender entered the ring, launching opposite Ryan Gosling and quickly captivating audiences. Project Hail Mary, based on the acclaimed novel by Andy Weir (author of The Martian), has delivered Amazon MGM its best opening weekend to date, sparking questions about whether it will become the studio’s first major hit since the Creed films.

Ryan Gosling’s star power was undeniable in Barbie, but the film’s success was largely driven by the brand and Margot Robbie’s leading role. While Gosling previously shone in Blade Runner 2049 ($32.7 million opening), and enjoyed success with La La Land ($446 million worldwide) and The Notebook ($81 million domestic), Project Hail Mary marks his most expensive project to date, carrying a hefty $200 million price tag.

A Launch to Remember: $80.6 Million Opening

Project Hail Mary blasted off with an impressive $80.6 million opening weekend. This is a significant achievement, especially considering initial projections ranged from $50 million to the mid-60s. The positive buzz generated by critics and early word-of-mouth clearly played a crucial role. This opening ranks as the ninth-best March opening ever.

The success is particularly noteworthy when looking at historical data. Of March releases opening between $50-70 million, only one – Disney’s 2015 live-action Cinderella – surpassed $200 million. However, Project Hail Mary’s sci-fi genre and potential family appeal could give it the edge it needs to break that mold. The Phil Lord and Christopher Miller adaptation is hoping to avoid the fate of recent Amazon MGM disappointments like Mercy, Melania, and Crime 101.

Comparing to The Martian and Beyond

The Martian, also penned by Andy Weir and starring Matt Damon, opened to $54.3 million in 2015 and ultimately grossed over $619 million globally. Project Hail Mary’s strong start suggests it has the potential to follow a similar trajectory. The film currently boasts a 95% score on the Tomatometer and an A Cinemascore from audiences – a promising combination, as films with similar ratings (like Skyfall, Dune: Part Two, and Oppenheimer) have consistently exceeded $250 million at the box office.

Internationally, Project Hail Mary added $60 million, bringing its global opening to nearly $141 million. This strong international performance is a positive sign for the film’s long-term prospects.

The Competition and What Lies Ahead

While Project Hail Mary shines, other films are also vying for audience attention. Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers fell to second place with $18 million after 17 days, totaling $120.3 million. Other releases, like Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Ready or Not 2, are also making their mark, but Project Hail Mary’s momentum is undeniable.

The coming weeks will be crucial. With a strong critical reception, enthusiastic audience response, and a global reach, Project Hail Mary is poised to become a major success for Amazon MGM. Whether it can reach the heights of The Martian remains to be seen, but the early signs are incredibly encouraging.
