Teyana Taylor: A Multi-Hyphenate Force on the Path to Oscar Glory
Teyana Taylor is a whirlwind of creativity, balancing a demanding schedule that would overwhelm most. As the 2026 Oscar nominations loom, she’s navigating a Q&A session for her critically acclaimed film, One Battle After Another, preparing for NBA All-Star weekend promotions, styling her own photoshoots, casting for her directorial debut, Get Lite, and even completing culinary school assignments – all while being a devoted mother of two. Her dedication is unwavering.
“I love when it’s hard—that means it’s of purpose,” Taylor explains. “I want everything that is supposed to be mine. And I’m going to work my ass off to make sure that I see that.” This drive stems from a long-held ambition. Five years ago, she was contemplating retirement from music, with limited acting experience. Fast forward to 2026, and she’s a Grammy nominee, a Golden Globe winner, and a frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.
From Multi-Talented to Award-Winning
Taylor doesn’t define herself by a single label. She’s not just an actor, director, musician, dancer, or choreographer – she embodies all of these roles. Being recognized for all of them, however, has been a challenge. It required patience and perseverance. She describes herself as a “Glade PlugIn,” adaptable and ready to contribute wherever she’s needed. Her speech is lyrical, circling ideas with carefully chosen words.
When asked about this pivotal moment, she visualizes an archer. “This is the view,” she says, aiming at an imaginary target. “God, he’s right behind me. We pull back”—she mimics drawing an arrow, counting the years of effort, tears, and prayers. “Here’s the work, here’s the tears, here’s the prayers, the ups, the downs.” And then, after two decades, she releases the arrow. “It knocked down all the bottles at the same time,” she says. “That’s what it feels like.”
Seizing Every Opportunity
Taylor has always understood the importance of maximizing every opportunity. Her career began with a dance battle in Harlem, leading to choreography work with Beyoncé on the iconic “Ring the Alarm” video. She was signed by Pharrell Williams at 15 and appeared on My Super Sweet 16. A chance encounter at a Kanye West recording session led to vocal contributions on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
This proactive spirit shone in her role in One Battle, where she captivated audiences with her portrayal of Perfidia Beverly Hills, the charismatic leader of the French 75. Despite limited screen time, Taylor’s performance was magnetic, earning her widespread acclaim and propelling her into Oscar contention.
Vulnerability and Strength: Perfidia’s Impact
Perfidia is a complex character – brash, unapologetic, and determined. But it’s the vulnerability Taylor brings to the role that truly resonates. A particularly poignant scene depicts Perfidia’s silent struggle with postpartum depression, a moment Taylor drew from her own experiences. “That’s something I think every mom has been through,” she shares, referencing her role in the 2023 film A Thousand and One. “We’re dealing with not feeling heard, not feeling seen, not feeling beautiful.”
While Perfidia’s response is extreme, Taylor emphasizes the importance of understanding her motivations. “Maybe men would look at Perfidia as selfish,” she says, “But a lot of women understand her.” She believes it’s empowering to see a woman prioritize herself in a society that demands constant selflessness.
Breaking Barriers and Defining Her Own Path
Taylor refuses to be confined by expectations. When she stepped away from music in 2020, she faced criticism. “Everybody told me it was dumb,” she recalls. “And I was like, ‘No, I am going to be a great actress. One day, I am going to be a great director.’” Now, her vision is becoming a reality.
Despite the pressure of an Oscar nomination, Taylor remains grounded. “Even if I go home empty-handed, I have won,” she says, recognizing the honor of being among the best in her field and the joy of connecting with her fellow nominees, including her “awards-season bestie,” Jacob Elordi. She embraces the celebratory atmosphere, finding humor and camaraderie amidst the seriousness of the event.
Looking Ahead: The Future is Bright
Taylor’s ambition extends beyond the Oscars. She plans to tour with her album Escape Room, complete her culinary school degree, and begin filming Get Lite. And, with a playful glint in her eye, she sets her sights on the EGOT. “And if I don’t get that Tony, guess what that T is gonna stand for? Teyana.”
Her message is clear: “When you have a creative that does it all, let them spread their wings. Never cage a creative.”
