Madeira Carnival Celebrations: Traditions, Fun, and Family Experiences

The Madeira Theme Park in Santana is once again embracing the carnival season with a program designed to celebrate Madeiran traditions and provide moments of conviviality and entertainment for families, schools, and visitors. From thematic exhibitions to a children’s parade and traditional cuisine, the initiative aims to reinforce the Park as a ‘living culture space’.

A Celebration of Madeiran Culture

The festivities kick off on February 12th with the opening of the exhibition “Compadres and Comadres of Madeira,” featuring figures crafted by the park’s collaborators. These representations will be displayed throughout the park, showcasing characters and traditions from each municipality. This exhibition is integrated into the celebration of the Festa dos Compadres, a significant event in the Madeiran cultural calendar.

Carnival Parade and Sweet Treats

Also on February 12th, at 2:00 PM, the Carnival Parade will take place, featuring children from schools in the municipality of Santana. This vibrant event promises joy and community involvement. Traditional malassadas (Portuguese doughnuts), prepared in a traditional wood-fired kitchen, will be distributed to the participating children, highlighting the gastronomic aspect of the festivities. You can learn more about traditional Portuguese cuisine here.

Valentine’s Day with a Sweet Touch

On February 14th, the Park celebrates “Valentine’s Day with Dreams,” offering traditional sonhos (another type of Portuguese doughnut) also prepared in the traditional wood-fired kitchen.

Carnival Fun for All

On February 17th, the program further emphasizes the gastronomic aspect, offering a branded gift to all children in costume with the purchase of a full child ticket.

More Than Just Carnival

With this program, the Madeira Theme Park aims to encourage participation and the carnival spirit in a family-friendly environment, providing unique experiences for visitors of all ages. Beyond these seasonal initiatives, the Park remains a reference point for learning about the history, ethnography, and cultural heritage of the Region, in an open-air, educational setting designed to be enjoyed by the community.

The Madeira Theme Park offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the island. For more information about Madeira’s cultural attractions, visit Visit Madeira.
