A New Era of Movement in League of Legends
For years, League of Legends has been defined by its precise point-and-click movement. However, Riot Games is shaking up the foundations of the Rift. In a move that could redefine how players navigate the map, the studio has officially announced the launch of WASD controls.
This highly anticipated alternative control scheme is rolling out to ranked matches starting with Patch 26.9, offering players a keyboard-driven way to traverse the battlefield instead of relying solely on the mouse.
Balance and Performance: Point-and-Click vs. WASD
Riot Games didn’t rush this implementation. First teased in August, the development team spent months ensuring that WASD movement wouldn’t provide an unfair competitive advantage over the traditional system. The goal was clear: maintain a narrow gap in win-loss rates between the two methods.
According to a recent devlog, there is still a slight advantage for point-and-click users. Riot stated:
“There’s still a small delta in the win-rates between the control schemes, with Point and Click having a minor advantage. We expect that difference will decrease over time as players gain more mastery with WASD.”
Beyond Movement: Enhancing Accessibility
The introduction of WASD is part of a broader push toward making League of Legends more accessible to a diverse range of players. Alongside the new movement system, Riot is implementing several key quality-of-life updates:
- n
- Custom Cursor Inputs: New options for moving the mouse cursor to better suit individual needs.
- Enhanced Keybind Flexibility: More freedom to map controls, allowing for a truly personalized gaming experience.
- Joystick Compatibility: While Riot has explicitly stated that official support for controllers and gamepads is not being added, players can still utilize WASD controls via a joystick.
What This Means for the Community
Whether you are a veteran player or a newcomer coming from other genres like FPS or Action-RPGs, the addition of WASD movement opens up new possibilities for gameplay styles. While the learning curve may be steep for some, the potential for increased accessibility makes this one of the most significant mechanical updates in the game’s long history.
As Patch 26.9 rolls out, it will be fascinating to see how the meta evolves and if WASD eventually closes the win-rate gap to become a preferred choice for the competitive scene.
