Lamorne Morris Breaks Barriers: Suiting Up as The Spider in ‘Spider-Noir’
In the world of comic book storytelling, the struggle to protect a secret identity often leads to ingenious—and sometimes hilarious—deceptions. From the classic tropes of Batman: The Animated Series to the latest cinematic ventures, the “decoy hero” is a fan-favorite plot twist. This is exactly what unfolded in the gripping Season 1 finale of Spider-Noir, titled “The Man in the Mask,” where Lamorne Morris stepped into a role that is both a plot pivot and a historic milestone.
A Heroic Decoy: The Climax of “The Man in the Mask”
The tension reaches a breaking point when the villainous Silvermane (played by Brendan Gleeson) becomes convinced that Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage) is actually The Spider. To force a reveal, Silvermane puts singer Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) in mortal danger, creating a lose-lose situation for Reilly: save the woman and reveal his powers, or remain hidden and let her perish.
Just as the situation seems dire, enter Robbie Robertson, played by the charismatic Lamorne Morris. In a brilliant move, Robertson barges in dressed as The Spider, delivering a spot-on Nicolas Cage impression that completely baffles Silvermane. While it was a ruse to protect the real hero, it gave Morris the opportunity to embody the legendary character on screen.
Making Marvel History in Live-Action
Beyond the plot twist, this moment carries significant weight in the history of the Marvel Cinematic landscape. While the animated Spider-Verse films have successfully brought the Black Hispanic hero Miles Morales into the mainstream, the live-action realm had a gap to fill.
Despite previous efforts in the franchise, Lamorne Morris becomes the first Black man to wear a Spider-Man-style costume in a live-action production. Although the character is called “The Spider” to fit the period setting of the show, the symbolic impact remains the same. It is a powerful moment of representation that resonates far beyond a single episode.
A “Dream Come True” for Lamorne Morris
For Morris, the experience was nothing short of surreal. In a recent interview, he opened up about the secrecy surrounding the scene and the adrenaline of finally sharing it with the world:
“It was a dream come true. Beyond anything. It was one of those things where, when you read it in the script, you go, ‘You have got to be sh*tting me. There’s no way.’ Suiting up as The Spider is crazy… I remember in wardrobe, going through the process and moving around going, ‘Hmm, I could get used to this!'”
Morris expressed his excitement about the possibility of the role, jokingly suggesting that if Nicolas Cage ever decides to hang up the suit, he is more than ready to step in permanently.
Where to Watch Spider-Noir
When he isn’t saving the day in a costume, Morris delivers a stellar performance as the determined journalist Robbie Robertson, navigating the gritty streets and uncovering leads in a noir-inspired world.
