Jumanji 4 Gets a Christmas Release, Reflecting on the Franchise’s History
Sony Pictures has announced a change of plans for the highly anticipated Jumanji 4, shifting its release date from December 11th to Christmas Day. This strategic move positions the film to capitalize on the holiday family movie-going audience, avoiding direct competition with the behemoth releases of Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday and Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Three.
A Familiar Launchpad for Jumanji
The pre-Christmas slot has proven successful for previous Jumanji installments. The 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level, grossed over $800 million worldwide, and the 2017 reboot, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, exceeded $962.5 million globally. The entire franchise has amassed over $2.02 billion, making it a significant player in the holiday box office.
Returning Cast & Creative Team
Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan are all set to reprise their roles in Jumanji 4. Joining them are returning cast members Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, and Rhys Darby, alongside newcomers Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes. Jake Kasdan returns to direct, having co-written the script with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. He will also produce alongside Matt Tolmach, Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia.
Christmas Day Competition
While Jumanji 4 now has a prime holiday slot, it won’t be without competition. Robert Eggers’ creature feature Werwulf from Focus Features, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Paramount’s Untitled John Tuggle Project about a notable NFL draft pick are also slated for Christmas Day release. Paramount’s The Angry Birds Movie 3 will open on December 23rd, adding another family-friendly option to the mix.
Remembering the Original: Robin Williams’ Legacy
The original 1995 Jumanji, starring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst, remains a beloved classic. The film captivated audiences with its imaginative premise of a board game that brought a wild safari adventure into the real world. Kasdan and Johnson successfully rebooted the franchise in 2017, reimagining the concept with a video game setting and avatars representing alternate versions of the characters. The enduring appeal of the Jumanji concept, and the memory of Williams’ iconic performance, continue to drive the franchise’s success.
The success of the Jumanji franchise demonstrates the enduring power of family-friendly adventure films, especially during the holiday season. With a star-studded cast, a proven director, and a nostalgic connection to the original, Jumanji 4 is poised to become another blockbuster hit.
