Jeffrey Donovan: A Colorado Life
“Burn Notice” star Jeffrey Donovan has firmly planted roots in Colorado and has no intention of returning to Los Angeles. In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, the 57-year-old actor shared the story behind his move and why he believes Colorado is the perfect place to raise a family.
From Set to Settled: Meeting His Wife
Donovan’s journey to Colorado began when he met his future wife, Michelle Woods, while wrapping up a project. “I met my future wife while I was finishing a job, and she was from Colorado, and once I started visiting there, I never stopped,” he explained. “It’s an incredible state and, I’m raising my children there, and we’re never leaving.” The couple married in August 2012 in a small ceremony in Santa Barbara, California, after meeting in 2011.
Family First: Raising Children in the Sunshine State
Since then, Jeffrey and Michelle have welcomed three children: Claire, Lucas, and Ethan. Donovan playfully declares Colorado the true “sunshine state,” contrasting it with Florida, which he jokingly refers to as “the thunderstorm state.” He emphasizes the healthy lifestyle and abundant sunshine that Colorado offers. “Colorado, secretly, is the sunshine state,” he said. “It’s a beautiful part of the country that gets more sunshine than maybe even Arizona and New Mexico. It’s incredible. So that’s why we’re there. And it’s really healthy living.”
A Change of Pace: Leaving Hollywood Behind
While Donovan acknowledges that many of his friends remain in Los Angeles, he finds raising children in Colorado to be less challenging. He believes the environment provides a more supportive atmosphere for family life. “I find it less challenging in Colorado, which plays to my talent level of raising kids,” Donovan explained. “If it’s not hard raising kids in Colorado, then that’s where I wanna be.”
‘Burn Notice’ and Beyond
Donovan first gained widespread recognition for his role as Michael Westen in the hit series “Burn Notice” (2007-2013). He reflects on the show with gratitude, acknowledging its demanding nature but also recognizing that it led him to his wife and family. He shared with Build in 2017, “I feel very fortunate about the show, but I also know that at the time it was the most grueling to this day job I’ve ever had… I would never have met my future wife and had my three beautiful children.” Burn Notice remains a fan favorite.
New Horizons: ‘The Faithful’
Currently, Donovan is starring in the three-part series “The Faithful,” which offers a unique perspective on the Book of Genesis, focusing on the stories of five women. He portrays Abraham, a role he describes as a “big swing.” He recounted a particularly challenging scene where his character speaks with God, emphasizing the pressure of portraying such a profound moment for an audience with diverse beliefs. He credits his co-star, Minnie Driver, with helping him find the confidence to embrace the role.
Marriage and Family: Lessons Learned
Donovan also shared insights into portraying the marriage between Abraham and Sarah, emphasizing the importance of realism and acknowledging the complexities of long-term relationships. He believes that a shared commitment to prioritizing family and children is essential for a successful marriage. “It’s challenging, and if you and your partner… can come to some sort of agreement that we are in it for the long haul… I think your children and your family will end up all right.”
