Janai Norman Departs ‘Good Morning America’ Weekend
A significant change is coming to ABC’s Good Morning America Weekend. Janai Norman, a familiar face to viewers as a co-anchor alongside Whit Johnson and Gio Benitez, is leaving the show, according to recent reports. The news, first reported by Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter, indicates that Norman’s contract with ABC has expired and was not renewed.
While her final airdate remains unconfirmed, the departure raises questions about the future of the weekend broadcast. It’s currently unclear whether ABC plans to replace Norman or if she will transition to another role within the network. Norman’s contributions extended beyond Good Morning America Weekend; she also hosted the wildlife program Oh Baby!, airing on ABC stations.
A Rising Star’s Journey at ABC News
Norman’s career with ABC News began in 2011 as an intern. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a correspondent based in New York, contributing to various ABC News programs and platforms. Her versatility was evident in her roles hosting the ‘Pop News’ segment on Good Morning America Weekend and her involvement in the launch of the second hour of Saturday’s GMA in October 2019.
Notable Reporting and Personal Storytelling
The 36-year-old journalist has covered a wide range of significant news events throughout her tenure. She previously co-anchored World News Now and America This Morning, reporting on pivotal moments such as Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle’s departure from the royal family, the death of Jeffrey Epstein, and the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
Beyond hard news, Norman demonstrated a commitment to important social issues. She bravely shared her personal journey in the Hulu documentary special Breaking the Mental Health Stigma for Black Women, opening up about the challenges she’s faced in both her personal life and career. This vulnerability resonated with viewers and highlighted the importance of mental health awareness.
Expanding Role and Recent Network Changes
In addition to her weekend anchoring duties, Norman also rotated anchoring ABC News Live Weekend as the streaming network expanded its weekend coverage. Her departure follows a similar move by ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman, who joined CBS News earlier this year as a key on-air hire for the network’s new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss. Gutman had been with ABC News since 2008, contributing to programs like Good Morning America, World News Tonight, Nightline, and 20/20.
The Good Morning America team includes prominent figures like George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan, Lara Spencer, Ginger Zee, Whit Johnson, and Gio Benitez. The network has not yet commented on how Norman’s departure will impact the show’s dynamic.
Stay tuned for further updates on Janai Norman’s future endeavors.
