Jamie Lee Curtis: Beyond the Scream
Jamie Lee Curtis, a name synonymous with horror for many, launched her career as a scream queen in classic films like “Halloween” and “Prom Night.” But beneath the surface of the genre icon lies a multifaceted actress with a surprisingly complex relationship with the very films that propelled her to stardom. While known for her roles in chilling thrillers, Curtis has recently garnered critical acclaim and an Oscar for her work in diverse projects, proving her range and talent.

A Surprising Admission: Not a Horror Fan?
Speaking at the SXSW festival in Texas, Curtis revealed a surprising truth: she isn’t actually a fan of the horror genre. “I don’t really love it. I’m not joking; I’m not into it,” she confessed. “It doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it. It’s just not my genre, not my thing.” Despite this, she acknowledges the profound impact horror has had on her life and career. “I owe my life to the genre, but I don’t have to pretend that I’m a genre girl and I love it.”
Celebrating Horror’s Recognition
However, Curtis expressed delight at the recent recognition horror films have received, particularly with nominations and wins for films like “Sinners” and “Weapons” at the Oscars. “The fact that it’s a genre that now is getting more understanding and appreciation, of course I’m happy. It’s fantastic that the Academy is moving along with that and changing and growing, like any good institution,” she stated. This shift in perception is a welcome change for the industry and for Curtis, who has long been associated with the genre.
Returning to Haddonfield: The ‘Halloween’ Trilogy
Curtis famously revisited her iconic role as Laurie Strode in David Gordon Green’s 2018 “Halloween” sequel, a direct continuation of the original 1978 film. However, she admits she wouldn’t have signed on for the subsequent films, “Halloween Kills” and “Halloween Ends,” had she known they were part of a trilogy.

Instead, she strategically used the opportunity to negotiate a development deal with Blumhouse’s Jason Blum. “The only reason I am sitting in this chair today is because of Jason. Jason Blum, who runs Blumhouse, is the one who brought back the ‘Halloween’ movies,” she explained. She cleverly leveraged her contractual obligations, stating, “If they had come to me and said it’s going to be a trilogy, I don’t think I would have said yes.”
A ‘Vanity Deal’ and a Smart Business Move
Curtis revealed that Blumhouse is known for its low-budget productions, often achieved by minimizing actor salaries. She used this knowledge to her advantage, approaching Blum with a proposition. “I went to Jason Blum and said, ‘I have some ideas, maybe you could give me a first look deal, just pay me a little money’. I said to Jason, ‘How about a little development deal?’ And I owed him two ‘Halloween’ movies, so what was he gonna say? Jason Blum gave me a vanity deal.” This demonstrates Curtis’s shrewd business acumen and her ability to turn a genre commitment into a valuable career opportunity.
The Legacy Continues
Jamie Lee Curtis’s journey from scream queen to Oscar winner is a testament to her talent, versatility, and business savvy. She continues to challenge herself with diverse roles and remains a prominent figure in Hollywood, proving that her career is far from over. Her story is an inspiring example of how to navigate a long and successful career in the entertainment industry.
