James Marsden Returns to Don the Visor in Avengers: Doomsday

It’s been twelve years since fans last saw James Marsden embody the iconic role of Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, in a brief but memorable appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Following his portrayal in the original X-Men trilogy, Marsden’s time as the X-Men leader seemed to conclude with that cameo (with Tye Sheridan later taking on the mantle). However, prepare for a nostalgic return, as Marsden is officially back as Cyclops in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.

Confirmation of Marsden’s return first surfaced with a chair sighting and a tantalizing teaser trailer earlier this year. Recently, while promoting his upcoming Hulu original movie, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, we had the opportunity to speak with James Marsden about reprising his role as Cyclops. The conversation revealed a surprising detail: he didn’t even need to read the script to commit!

Missing the Wolverine Dynamic

But the excitement wasn’t solely about returning to the character. Marsden also expressed a fondness for his on-screen rivalry with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. When asked about playing Cyclops without Jackman’s presence, he shared a revealing sentiment:

“I love Hugh Jackman, and I love the dynamic between Wolverine and Cyclops. It was always a brotherly, healthy competition between the two of them, where they were annoyed with each other. It did feel like a brotherly relationship. I wouldn’t say that I was excited to slide into that role without him barking in my ear. He was missed.”

This suggests that Avengers: Doomsday might explore a different facet of Cyclops, one perhaps more vulnerable and emotionally exposed without the constant challenge from Wolverine. The initial teaser trailer hints at this, showcasing a distraught and screaming Cyclops – a stark contrast to his typically stoic demeanor.

A Return Without a Script?

Perhaps even more surprising was Marsden’s admission that he signed on for Avengers: Doomsday without reading the script. He explained:

“It was a conversation. And in that conversation, we talked about what my involvement would be and everything, but I hadn’t actually read the script yet. So that was something like, yeah, sure, yes, of course.”

This level of trust and confidence in the project’s creative team speaks volumes about Marsden’s enthusiasm for revisiting the role. It also suggests a compelling narrative that resonated with him even without the details on paper.

What to Expect in Avengers: Doomsday

While the full cast of Avengers: Doomsday remains under wraps, Marsden’s return is confirmed. Jackman hasn’t officially confirmed his participation, but the possibility remains. What’s certain is that Marsden will be presenting a new and potentially more complex version of Cyclops, one grappling with immense pressure and perhaps, a profound sense of loss.

Fans can catch James Marsden in Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, available this Friday, March 27th, on Hulu and Disney+. And mark your calendars for his return to the X-Men universe in Avengers: Doomsday this December.
