Jake Shane Isn’t Finished with Broadway
Jake Shane, the charismatic host of “Therapuss” and a rising actor, recently made a splash with his Broadway debut in Simon Rich’s “All Out: Comedy About Ambition,” sharing the stage with talents like Nicholas Braun, Ray Romano, and Jenny Slate. The experience was nothing short of transformative.
“It was like one of those moments where I was like, ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this,’” Shane shared at Vanity Fair’s Vanities Young Hollywood party at Bar Marmont. He added, “At the end, it hit me all at once and I was like, ‘I want to do this again and again for the rest of my life.’” This sentiment underscores a newfound passion for the stage, signaling a promising future for Shane in the world of theater.
The Dream Role: Mary in “Oh, Mary!”
But Shane’s ambitions don’t stop there. He has his sights set on a particularly coveted role: Mary in Cole Escola’s Tony-winning comedy, “Oh, Mary!” This unique production reimagines First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln as a cabaret singer grappling with alcoholism in the days leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
While Escola acknowledges the slim chances of Shane being cast, he admits, “It would be incredible…that’s the dream.” Shane himself echoes this enthusiasm, stating, “I do have the theater bug now. It’s a real bug and I have it.”
A Stellar Production with Rotating Stars
“Oh, Mary!” initially captivated audiences off-Broadway before making its Broadway debut in 2024, earning five Tony nominations and winning Best Actor in a Play for Escola and Best Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton. The role of Mary has seen a succession of acclaimed performers, including Jane Krakowski, Jinkx Monsoon, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, and John Cameron Mitchell. Most recently, Maya Rudolph was announced to take on the role starting April 28th.
The production has also featured appearances from other notable names such as Simu Liu, Kumail Nanjiani, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Cheyenne Jackson, and Michael Urie, solidifying its reputation as a must-see theatrical experience.
Beyond the Stage: A Rising Creative Force
Shane’s talents extend far beyond the Broadway stage. He was recently recognized as one of Variety’s 10 Creators to Watch, a testament to his innovative spirit. He’s also taken on a significant role as the Chief Creative Officer of the German candy company Katjes, demonstrating his versatility and business acumen.
Adding another layer to his burgeoning career, Shane’s film debut, “Wishful Thinking,” is set to premiere at this year’s SXSW festival. This marks an exciting new chapter for the multi-talented performer, showcasing his range and potential in the world of cinema.
Jake Shane is undoubtedly a name to watch. His passion for the arts, combined with his creative drive and entrepreneurial spirit, positions him for continued success in the entertainment industry.
