Michael Patrick, an actor who graced the screen in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, has tragically passed away at the age of 35. His death comes three years after he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND), a devastating condition that affects the nervous system.

The news was shared by his wife, Naomi Sheehan, on Instagram on Tuesday. She announced that Patrick died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, after being admitted to hospice care in Northern Ireland ten days prior. Sheehan’s heartfelt message expressed the profound grief felt by those who knew and loved him, stating, “Words can’t describe how broken-hearted we are.”

Understanding Motor Neuron Disease

Motor neuron disease, also known as MND, is a group of conditions that progressively destroy motor neurons – the nerve cells that control essential muscle activities like walking, breathing, speaking, and swallowing. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there is currently no cure for most forms of MND, although research into new treatments is ongoing.

Patrick received his diagnosis in February 2023. In a poignant social media post on February 6th, he revealed that a neurologist had given him a prognosis of approximately one year to live. Despite the grim outlook, Patrick faced his illness with remarkable courage and spirit.

A Life Lived to the Fullest

Sheehan’s tribute highlighted Patrick’s vibrant personality and zest for life. “It’s been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him,” she wrote. “Patrick lived a life as full as any human can live—joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger-haired man.”

Beyond his role as a wildling rioter in Season 6 of Game of Thrones (as listed on IMDb), Patrick was a multi-talented individual. He studied science at the University of Cambridge and honed his comedic skills with the Cambridge Footlights. He also co-wrote the critically acclaimed BBC series My Left Nut, which garnered three Royal Television Society awards and the Summerhall Lustrum Award.

Additional Credits and Legacy

Patrick’s acting credits also include appearances in This Town (created by Steven Knight, the mind behind Peaky Blinders), The Spectacular, and Blasts From the Past. In Northern Ireland, he was celebrated for his innovative portrayal of Richard III in a wheelchair production of Shakespeare’s Richard III, as reported by the BBC.

Sheehan concluded her Instagram post with a quote from Irish writer Brendan Behan, a favorite of Patrick’s: “The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.” Michael Patrick’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through his work, his spirit, and the memories he created with those who were fortunate enough to know him.
