From the Screen to the Pitch: Cristo Fernández Brings ‘Dani Rojas’ Energy to Professional Soccer
For fans of the hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, the phrase “Fútbol is life!” is more than just a catchphrase—it’s a philosophy. Now, Cristo Fernández, the actor who brought the beloved Dani Rojas to life, has turned that fictional passion into a professional reality.
Over the weekend, Fernández officially made his professional soccer debut in the United States, proving that it is never too late to chase a lifelong dream.
The Big Moment: Debut with El Paso Locomotive FC
The excitement reached a fever pitch at Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas, during a match between El Paso Locomotive FC and New Mexico United. As Fernández stepped onto the field in the 79th minute, the atmosphere was electric.
Broadcasters captured the magic of the moment, noting that his appearance was exactly “what everybody came to see tonight.” In a nod to his iconic character, one commentator couldn’t help but chime in with the legendary line: “Cristo Fernández: ‘Fútbol is life!'”
While the match ended in a 2-0 loss for his club and Fernández picked up a yellow card in the 87th minute, the result on the scoreboard was secondary to the personal victory of returning to the game he loves.
A Journey of Resilience: From Youth Leagues to Acting
While many know him as a breakout star of Ted Lasso, soccer was Fernández’s first love. Long before the cameras started rolling, he had a promising start in the sport:
- n
- Early Career: He played youth soccer for the Mexican club Guadalajara Estudiantes Tecos Club.
- International Experience: He also spent time with Puerto Rico’s Guayama FC.
- The Setback: Unfortunately, severe injuries sidelined his athletic ambitions, forcing him to pivot his focus.
Turning toward the arts, Fernández pursued a degree in Mexico before moving to England to graduate from the prestigious Guildford School of Acting at the University of Surrey. This path eventually led him to the role of Dani Rojas in 2020, where his upbeat personality captured hearts worldwide.
A Dream Come True
Fernández’s return to professional soccer wasn’t an overnight occurrence. He joined the USL Championship side after an extensive two-month trial, training rigorously with the team and appearing in preseason matches to prove his fitness and skill.
“I love the city. I love the team. It’s a dream come true,” Fernández shared in a recent interview. “Since day one they welcomed me, they let me compete, and they treated me like another player.”
Cristo Fernández’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that our passions don’t have to disappear—they just sometimes take a detour. Whether on a movie set or a soccer pitch, for Fernández, life is indeed about the game.
