Nwodim is an accomplished actress and producer, having spent seven seasons on SNL, where she established herself as a groundbreaking comedic voice, earning a Critics’ Choice Award nomination and two NAACP Image Award nominations.
Beyond her iconic work on Saturday Night Live, Nwodim has built an impressive and diverse career. She’s graced the screen in television series like Peacock’s Poker Face, HBO’s It’s Florida, Man, and Apple TV+’s anthology series Roar. Her film credits include Netflix’s Players, IFC’s Spin Me Round, and Sony’s Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Adding another layer to her talents, she hosts the award-winning podcast, “Thanks Dad,” featuring high-profile guests like Randall Park, Kyle Mooney, and Bill Burr.
What’s Next for Ego Nwodim?
Nwodim’s momentum continues with upcoming roles in Mindy Kaling’s Hulu comedy Not Suitable for Work, Netflix’s Little Brother, Backyard Baseball, and Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers. She also recently made her Off-Broadway debut at Lincoln Center with a one-woman comedy show as part of “The Comedy Series.”
Known for her sharp wit, infectious energy, and welcoming stage presence, Nwodim brings a fresh and exciting perspective to one of awards season’s most beloved celebrations of independent filmmaking. Ahead of the ceremony, we had the opportunity to speak with her about preparing for her first time hosting an awards show, her passion for indie films, and what audiences can expect from this year’s Spirit Awards.
A Conversation with Ego Nwodim
On the abundance of content available today: “I have seen a good portion of the nominated films and shows, but I can’t pick a favorite. As a host, I feel like a mother of the evening, and I couldn’t pick a favorite child! I’ve enjoyed a lot of what I’ve seen and am excited to honor those films this awards season.”
On her pre-show ritual: “I don’t have a typical ritual. I just see what my vibe is and play off the energy of the room. This is a completely new gig for me, which is incredibly energizing. I’m fortunate to have opportunities to do things I’ve never done before, and this is no different. I’m super excited and will feed off the energy of the night.”
On what to expect from the show: “People should tune in! If you want to hear what happens that night, the best thing to do is watch the show. It’ll be on Film Independent’s official site and YouTube.”
On the challenge of hosting: “The challenge is that I’ve never hosted the Film Independent Spirit Awards before! I’m such a fan of independent film, and hosting an awards show is a new experience. The newness of it all is invigorating. I’ve been writing with Patrick McDonald and Asha Ward, and we’ll see what happens on Sunday, just like everyone else tuning in.”
On the preparation process: “Preparation has been ongoing for months, though my schedule is so hectic I couldn’t pinpoint exactly how long. We’ve been preparing and hope people enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.”
On measuring success: “Did I have fun? That’s the criteria. If the audience is having fun, I’m having fun. I think those things go hand in hand.”
On the stigma surrounding awards show hosting: “I’m not privy to any stigma. I’m super excited to do this. I was thrilled when the offer came in, and it was an immediate yes.”
Nwodim’s enthusiasm and genuine love for independent film are palpable. Her hosting of the Spirit Awards promises to be a refreshing and memorable experience. As she says, “I feel really honored to be part of the night and excited for people to tune in and see talented people acknowledged for their extraordinary work.”
