Darryl Hannah: A Timeless Icon Celebrated in ‘Love Story’

The FX series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, delves into the lives of the iconic 90s couple, featuring a cast of real-life figures. Among them is Darryl Hannah, the celebrated actress known for her roles in Splash and Kill Bill, whose relationship with JFK Jr. drew public attention. The show’s portrayal of Hannah has sparked interest, and actress Dree Hemingway, who plays Hannah in the series, recently shared her admiration for the star.

A Producer’s Approach to Real-Life Inspirations

Producer Nina Jacobson shared her approach to depicting real-life subjects in fictional works. She generally avoids direct engagement with public figures, preferring a research-based approach. “When you take more of a research posture as opposed to a personal interview position, we have found that you get a more dimensional view,” Jacobson explained to The Hollywood Reporter. This allows for a more nuanced portrayal, even without direct input from the individuals themselves.

Dree Hemingway’s ‘Love Note’ to Darryl Hannah

Hemingway, however, deviated from this rule, driven by a personal connection. Her mother, actress Mariel Hemingway, is friends with Darryl Hannah, and despite never having met the actress, Dree felt a deep admiration. During an interview at The Hollywood Reporter’s Nominees Night, Hemingway revealed she wrote Hannah a heartfelt “love note.”

“I basically wrote her a love note of how much I appreciate her as a woman, as an actress, and what an honor of my life this has been,” Hemingway shared. She emphasized that she had no expectation of a response, simply wanting to express her gratitude and respect.

Reflecting on the ’90s and the Kennedy Romance

Hemingway spoke about the captivating nature of the Kennedy-Bessette romance and the allure of the 90s setting. “They were our living Romeo and Juliet,” she said. “It was also such an iconic time – the ‘90s in New York. The fashion was amazing. The music was amazing, and there wasn’t the internet. It’s cool, and it still has this mystery.”

The Power of Collaboration and Unexpected Opportunities

Hemingway also expressed her gratitude for her collaboration with Ryan Murphy, calling him a “genius,” and credited director Sean Baker with launching her career with the film Starlet. “I really owe my whole entire career to him,” she stated. She highlighted Baker’s dedication to his collaborators, noting his lasting relationships with actors and fellow filmmakers.

Darryl Hannah remains a captivating figure in Hollywood, and her story continues to resonate with audiences through projects like Love Story. Hemingway’s heartfelt tribute underscores the enduring impact of Hannah’s talent and charisma.
