Courteney Cox Returns as Scream 7 Faces Protests
The premiere of Scream 7 at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles was met with a wave of protests in support of Palestine, adding a layer of complexity to the highly anticipated slasher film. Activists voiced their concerns regarding perceived biases within the entertainment industry, specifically alleging a “BLACKLIST” of actors who publicly criticize Israel.
Signs at the protest urged viewers to “Cancel Paramount+”, reflecting growing discontent over the handling of actors who express pro-Palestinian views. The demonstration was spearheaded by Entertainment Labor for Palestine, CODEPINK LA, Musicians for Palestine, and Jewish Voice for Peace-Los Angeles, and notably included strong support for Melissa Barrera.
The Melissa Barrera Controversy
In November 2023, Spyglass Media Group removed Melissa Barrera from Scream 7 after she voiced support for Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war. The production company cited a “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form” as the reason for her dismissal. This decision sparked significant backlash and ignited a broader conversation about freedom of speech and political expression within Hollywood. You can read more about the controversy here.
Cast Changes and Production Shifts
Barrera’s departure was followed by Jenna Ortega’s exit from the franchise, leaving Scream 7 in a state of uncertainty. Original director Christopher Landon also stepped down from the project. Despite these setbacks, Spyglass pressed forward, ultimately enlisting Kevin Williamson, the writer of the original 1996 Scream film, to direct.
Courteney Cox and the New Cast
Despite the turbulence, Scream 7 is still slated for release on February 27, 2026. Notably, Courteney Cox will reprise her iconic role as Gale Weathers, a fan favorite since the original film. She will be joined by returning cast member Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin. The film will also introduce Isabel May as Sidney’s daughter, alongside Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, McKenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Anna Camp.
The premiere protests highlight the increasing intersection of entertainment and political activism, demonstrating the power of public opinion and the challenges faced by studios navigating sensitive social issues. The future of the Scream franchise, and the reception of Scream 7, remain to be seen.
