Chloe Fineman Controversy: SNL Star’s Camp Counselor Story Sparks Outrage and Edits
“Saturday Night Live” star Chloe Fineman found herself at the centre of a controversy following a story shared in a Vanity Fair video. The story detailed an incident from her teenage years when she worked as a camp counselor, involving her pantsing a six-year-old boy. The revelation prompted shock from her “SNL” co-stars, ultimately leading to her dismissal from the camp.
The Vanity Fair video, titled “’SNL’ Cast Test How Well They Know Each Other,” initially presented Fineman asking her colleagues – Mikey Day, Sarah Sherman, Ashley Padilla, Jane Wickline, and James Austin Johnson – to guess which job resulted in her being fired and subsequently rehired. The guesses ranged from hostess positions to other common workplace scenarios, but none prepared them for the story she was about to share.
The Story Unfolds
“I was fired as a camp counselor,” Fineman recounted in the original video, explaining she was 16 at the time. She described a pattern of harassment from a young camper who would lift her shirt during hugs. “He would be like, ‘Hey, could I have a hug?’ And then I’d go to hug him and he’d lift my shirt, like a dick. And then I was like, ‘I’m going to get back at you.’ And so we were on a hike and I was like, ‘Hey, Ollie, go look over there. It’s a hawk.’ He looked and then I yanked his pants down, and then I was fired.”
However, the video underwent significant editing. Vanity Fair removed Fineman’s mention of the boy’s age (six years old) and a particularly graphic detail about the incident – that the boy wasn’t wearing underwear and the incident occurred in front of a school bus. The original video also included Padilla’s comment, “Oh, honey, I think you’re on a list somewhere,” which was also removed.
The Aftermath and Reactions
The original footage showed visible shock and discomfort from the “SNL” cast, with gasps and faces covered in reaction to Fineman’s story. These reactions were also cut from the edited version. Social media users quickly noticed the changes, expressing surprise at the story itself and questioning why Vanity Fair had chosen to sanitize the content. Variety reached out to Vanity Fair for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
This incident raises questions about the boundaries of comedic storytelling and the responsibility of media outlets when presenting potentially sensitive or controversial content. The initial reaction and subsequent editing of the video highlight the complexities of navigating these issues in the public sphere.
