Bill Maher Honored with the Prestigious Mark Twain Prize
TV host Bill Maher is set to receive the esteemed Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the Kennedy Center announced on Thursday. This announcement comes just days after the White House publicly denied that the comedian would be awarded the honor, adding a layer of intrigue to the event.
A Prize Amidst Controversy
The annual Mark Twain Prize, a celebration of comedic excellence, will be presented to Maher on June 28th, shortly before the Kennedy Center undergoes a two-year renovation. The center has recently faced challenges, including declining ticket sales and performer cancellations, partly attributed to changes implemented under President Donald Trump, including a controversial renaming initiative.
Maher’s Reaction and Signature Wit
In a characteristically humorous statement, Maher quipped, “Thank you to the Mark Twain people: I just had the award explained to me, and apparently it’s like an Emmy, except I win.” He continued, “I’d just like to say that it is indeed humbling to get anything named for a man who’s been thrown out of as many school libraries as Mark Twain.”
White House Denial and Political Commentary
Last week, reports surfaced indicating Maher would receive the prize. However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt swiftly dismissed these claims, telling CNN, “This is fake news. Bill Maher will NOT be getting this award.”
Maher has long been a vocal critic of Trump’s policies, frequently addressing them on his HBO program, “Real Time with Bill Maher” (also airing on CNN on Saturdays – both are part of Warner Bros. Discovery). While he has occasionally been the target of Trump’s criticism, he also sparked debate after a dinner with the former president, during which he offered praise.
Acknowledging Maher’s Unique Style
Roma Daravi, the Kennedy Center’s vice president of public relations, acknowledged Maher’s penchant for “politically incorrect” humor. “For nearly three decades, the Mark Twain Prize has celebrated some of the greatest minds in comedy,” Daravi stated. “For even longer, Bill Maher has been influencing American discourse – one politically incorrect joke at a time.”
An Unlikely Dinner and Continued Tension
The dinner between Trump and Maher took place in 2025 at the White House, arranged by Kid Rock to facilitate a direct conversation. Despite Maher’s subsequent appearance on his show to discuss the meeting, their relationship remains strained. Trump has continued to criticize Maher on his Truth Social platform, recently labeling the comedian a “highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT.”
A Legacy of Laughter
Past recipients of the Mark Twain Prize include comedic giants such as Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Billy Crystal, Jon Stewart, and Adam Sandler. The gala event, traditionally held at the Kennedy Center, brings together a constellation of comedians and entertainers.
