Stop Scrolling! Here Are the Best Award-Winning Movies to Stream on Netflix
We have all been there: spending more time scrolling through the Netflix catalog than actually watching a movie. With thousands of titles available, finding a truly high-quality film can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
However, if you are looking for new movies on Netflix that offer more than just mindless entertainment, you have come to the right place. We have unearthed three acclaimed, award-winning masterpieces currently streaming on Netflix U.S. that are absolutely worth your time. Warning: one of these is leaving soon, so act fast!
1. Beginners: A Poignant Study of Love and Loss (Hurry, It’s Leaving!)
If you are in the mood for something emotionally resonant, Beginners is a must-watch. The film follows Oliver (played by Ewan McGregor), a graphic designer navigating the complexities of his life following the death of his father, Hal.
The story takes a fascinating turn when it reveals that Hal, at age 75, came out as gay after the passing of Oliver’s mother, embracing a vibrant new chapter of life. The narrative beautifully weaves together Oliver’s memories of his father and his budding romance with Anna (Mélanie Laurent).
- n
- Why it’s a gem: Christopher Plummer delivers a powerhouse performance as Hal, earning both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
- Urgency: This film is scheduled to leave Netflix U.S. after September 30. Don’t let it slip away!
2. The Deer Hunter: A Raw and Powerful War Epic
For fans of intense, character-driven cinema, The Deer Hunter is an absolute staple. This isn’t your typical action-packed war movie; it is a deep dive into trauma, friendship, and the psychological aftermath of conflict.
The plot centers on three friends—Mike (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken), and Steven (John Savage)—from a Pennsylvania steel town whose lives are irrevocably changed by the Vietnam War. With a runtime of over three hours, it is a significant commitment, but the payoff is immense.
Accolades: This cinematic achievement received nine Oscar nominations and won five, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken. You can check out more details about its legacy on IMDb.
3. The Prince of Egypt: A Nostalgic Animation Masterpiece
Our top pick this week is a breathtaking return to old-school animation: The Prince of Egypt. Retelling the biblical story of Moses, this musical focuses on the heartbreaking tension between Moses and his brother Rameses as they find themselves on opposite sides of a divine struggle.
What makes this movie stand out even decades later is the incredible production value:

- The Cast: A legendary voice cast including Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Patrick Stewart.
- The Music: A sweeping, iconic score by Hans Zimmer that acts as a character of its own.
- The Visuals: The animation remains stunning, especially during the grand-scale sequences.
