Angine de Poitrine Ignites Club Soda in Montreal
Khn and Klek of Angine de Poitrine took the stage at Club Soda, captivating the audience before even launching into their set with Yor Zarad. A playful finger triangle formed by the duo was instantly mirrored by the enthusiastic crowd – a welcoming into their unique musical world. This “mantra-rock dada-pythago-cubist orchestra,” as they’re known, has been turning heads, even catching the attention of Dave Grohl, who recently confessed his obsession with the Saguenay-based band.
The band’s performance, captured by KEXP radio, has amassed over seven million views on YouTube since February, creating a buzz that filled Club Soda with anticipation on Friday night. The venue itself was transformed, with fans sporting polka-dotted attire – a nod to the duo’s signature style. The stage was set with Khn’s two-necked microtonal guitar and Klek’s polka-dotted drum kit, complemented by striking black and white canvases.
A Sonic and Visual Experience
The launch of Angine de Poitrine’s Vol. II was a high-energy affair, complete with body surfing and mosh pits. The album itself is a standout, particularly the second half of “Fabienk,” showcasing a masterful use of microtonal loops with surgical precision. Translating this complexity to a live performance, in front of a demanding and ecstatic audience, is a feat in itself.
However, Angine de Poitrine doesn’t cater to expectations. They lead, and the audience follows. A collective clap, a synchronized squat, an accelerated tempo – the band dictates the energy, and the crowd responds in unison. Their lyrical communication, while fascinating, remains somewhat enigmatic to the human ear.
While the balcony offered a more relaxed viewing experience, the floor was a whirlwind of energy, fueled by the band’s extraordinary performance and the scent of beer gradually giving way to sweat. A sense of delightful strangeness permeated the air – a captivating blend of amusement and intrigue.
A Family Affair and a Glimpse into the Future
Adding to the dynamic, a third “Poitrine brother” – a photographer – moved between the stage and the crowd, capturing the energy of the night. This expanding family dynamic hints at a growing creative force.
Despite their experimental sound, Angine de Poitrine is resonating with audiences craving something different. In a world increasingly saturated with AI-generated music, listeners are drawn to bold, audacious ideas – ideas so strange that even the most advanced robots wouldn’t dare conceive them. The future of rock is here, on the stage of Club Soda: a rock that is uninhibited, pluralistic, and delightfully unclassifiable.
Closing their hour-and-a-quarter set with “Sherpa,” one of the most intense tracks from their debut album, Angine de Poitrine left the stage without an encore, despite fervent demands from the audience. They’ve already graced the stage at Club Soda on April 18th and November 14th (both sold out), and are scheduled to perform at the TD Stage of the Montreal International Jazz Festival on June 27th, and embark on a Quebec tour.
