Ravi Bellamkonda Named 18th President of Ohio State University
Just days after the resignation of its former president amidst controversy, Ohio State University has announced a new permanent leader: Ravi Bellamkonda. Currently serving as Ohio State’s executive vice president and provost, Bellamkonda was unanimously approved by the university’s board of trustees on March 12th to become the 18th president of this esteemed institution.
A Smooth Transition Following Controversy
The appointment comes after Ted Carter’s abrupt resignation following the admission of an inappropriate relationship with an individual seeking public resources. The board of trustees, while expressing gratitude for Carter’s service, was compelled to act swiftly to ensure a stable leadership transition. As The Columbus Dispatch reports, the board initiated an executive session after receiving an anonymous tip, leading to Carter’s resignation.
Bellamkonda’s Proven Leadership
Board chair John Zeiger emphasized that the ideal candidate was already within the university’s ranks. “The right leader is already at our university – and his vast experience, his personal values and management skills, and strong record at Ohio State and his ability to inspire excellence in all those around give the board of trustees great confidence that Ravi Bellamkonda is the right person to lead this university into the future as our president,” Zeiger stated.
A Vision for Ohio State’s Future
Bellamkonda, who officially began his role as provost in January 2025, articulated a vision for Ohio State to be a driving force in Ohio’s economic growth. He highlighted the university’s “incredible civic community” and its critical role in the state’s economy. “We often hear that Ohio State is a large place…But consider this, when excellence happens at the scale of Ohio State, we create an impact that is unmatched in its transformative power,” he said.
A Distinguished Career
Bellamkonda’s journey to Ohio State is marked by a distinguished academic and leadership career. Originally from India, he pursued his master’s degree at MIT and later earned his PhD in medical science and biomaterials from Brown University. He has held prominent positions at Case Western Reserve University, Georgia Institute of Technology & Emory School of Medicine, Duke University, and Emory University, consistently demonstrating a commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
His experience includes launching major initiatives focused on faculty recruitment, retention, and the integration of artificial intelligence across various disciplines. He is currently spearheading Ohio State’s new AI Fluency initiative.
Student Support and Confidence
Student trustee Kendall C. Buchan expressed enthusiasm for Bellamkonda’s appointment, praising his leadership and impact on the university’s strategic plan. “Your academics and your brilliance are impressive, but it’s especially how you treat people that’s the most impressive,” Buchan remarked.
Ravi Bellamkonda’s appointment signals a new chapter for Ohio State University, built on a foundation of experience, vision, and a commitment to serving the state of Ohio and its citizens.
