Forsyth County Schools Board to Address Financial Recovery and New Policies
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) Board of Education is set to convene on Tuesday for a crucial meeting addressing the district’s financial health and considering significant policy updates. Key topics include a review of the second report from the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor regarding financial management, potential revisions to residential boundaries, and evolving policies surrounding generative Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Second State Audit Reveals Financial Weaknesses
Superintendent Don Phipps will lead a detailed review of the recently released state auditor’s report, which highlights “severe weaknesses” in the district’s financial processes during fiscal year 2025. This report marks the second released by the state auditor’s office in the wake of the district’s $45 million budget crisis. The audit aims to provide a clear picture of the challenges faced and the steps needed to ensure fiscal responsibility.
In response to the initial findings, Superintendent Phipps stated, “WS/FCS is in a new era of fiscal responsibility. We have a balanced budget. We have practices in place to ensure it stays that way. We are on the path to recovery and long-term stability.” He is expected to elaborate on the progress made since the audit period and outline ongoing efforts to strengthen financial controls.
Residential Boundary Reviews Proposed
The board will also consider a new policy mandating residential boundary reviews every five years. This initiative is part of a larger plan to redraw school district boundaries for the first time in over three decades. This comprehensive review aims to optimize resource allocation and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for all students within Forsyth County Schools.
Navigating the Future with Generative AI
Recognizing the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, the board will discuss updates to policies regarding the use of generative AI in educational settings. These discussions will focus on responsible implementation, data privacy, and ensuring equitable access to these powerful tools. The policies will address information and data sharing protocols as well.
Ashley Elementary School Project Update
The board will review redesigned construction plans for the new Ashley Elementary School project. These revisions aim to optimize the project’s scope and budget, ensuring the school is built efficiently and effectively. While a full budget update isn’t on the agenda, Superintendent Phipps previously indicated the remaining debt associated with the project stands at approximately $4.7 million.
