Erie Insurance CEO Tim NeCastro Announces Retirement

Tim NeCastro, the driving force behind Erie Insurance’s success through a challenging pandemic, strategic expansion, and significant community revitalization efforts, has announced his retirement. NeCastro, 65, will step down at the year’s end, leaving behind a legacy of growth and dedication.

A Decade of Leadership and Growth

Appointed in 2016, succeeding Terrence Cavanaugh, NeCastro steered Erie Insurance to unprecedented heights. A proud Gannon University graduate and seasoned accountant, he oversaw a period of substantial growth, increasing premiums to nearly $13 billion and expanding the company’s policy base to over 7 million. Erie Insurance, a Fortune 500 company (ranked 323rd most recently), also achieved recognition on the S&P 500 Index in 2024, a testament to its financial strength and stability.

Beyond Financial Success: A Commitment to Erie

NeCastro’s leadership extended far beyond the company’s financial performance. He championed a significant expansion of Erie Insurance’s presence in Erie, Pennsylvania, including the construction of the $147 million Thomas B. Hagen Building and a major renovation of the F.W. Hirt Perry Square Building. Even during a network security incident that disrupted operations, NeCastro demonstrated his commitment to his team, personally preparing a large batch of meatballs to feed those working to resolve the issue.

Revitalizing the Community

Perhaps NeCastro’s most enduring impact will be his dedication to the Erie community. As Tom Hagen, Chairman of Erie Insurance’s board, stated, NeCastro’s role was not simply to run the company, but to uplift the community. This vision led to the creation of the Erie Downtown Development Corp., which has invested $150 million in downtown revitalization. He also served as chairman of Infinite Erie, a strategic initiative for community investment launched in 2022.

Philanthropic Endeavors

Alongside his wife, Lisa NeCastro, Tim has been a generous supporter of numerous charitable causes. They spearheaded the capital campaign for the Experience Children’s Museum, raising $18.5 million for its renovation and expansion in 2023. They also co-chair the United Way of Erie County’s Uniting for Education endowment campaign, supporting the organization’s Community Schools model.

Looking Ahead

The Erie Insurance board of directors has begun the search for NeCastro’s successor. While stepping down from his role as CEO, NeCastro has pledged to remain actively involved in the Erie community. “I see my being involved in this community until the day I die. I am never resigning from that role,” he stated. His career at Erie Insurance began in 1996, progressing through roles in internal audit, finance, and regional field operations.

Tim NeCastro’s tenure at Erie Insurance represents a defining chapter in the company’s history, marked by exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment to service, and a profound impact on the Erie community.
