## Alaska Airlines Doubles Down on Portland with $135 Million Hangar Investment

Alaska Airlines is significantly expanding its presence at Portland International Airport (PDX) with a substantial $135 million investment in a state-of-the-art maintenance hangar. This ambitious project, approved by the Port of Portland, is poised to generate over 100 new jobs for local maintenance workers and engineers, solidifying Alaska Airlines’ commitment to the Pacific Northwest.

Portland serves as a crucial hub for Alaska Airlines, and its subsidiary, Horizon Air, handling approximately 40% of all arriving and departing flights. This new facility will not only enhance the airline’s operational efficiency but also contribute significantly to the regional economy.

### Economic Impact and Job Creation

The development is expected to create around 200 construction jobs during the building phase and inject an estimated $8.7 million into state and local tax revenues. Beyond the initial construction, the hangar is projected to generate an additional $2 million annually in state and local taxes. This investment underscores Alaska Airlines’ dedication to fostering economic growth in the Portland area.

### Strengthening Regional Aviation Infrastructure

The new maintenance hangar will work in conjunction with existing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, supporting Horizon Air’s operations and improving aircraft repair turnaround times. This will allow Alaska Airlines to recover aircraft faster, minimizing disruptions and enhancing service reliability.

“The new hangar embodies our strong partnership with Alaska, and our mutual commitment to making our region a place where everyone can thrive,” stated Dan Pippenger, Chief Aviation Officer at the Port of Portland. “It’s a smart investment in our local talent that’s sure to boost our region’s economy and strengthen our future.”

### Alaska Airlines’ Portland Footprint

Currently, Alaska Airlines employs over 2,900 people in the Portland region. The airline offers 62 non-stop destinations from PDX, operating flights through Alaska, Horizon, and Hawaiian Airlines. Between August 2024 and July 2025, Alaska Airlines served over 6.9 million passengers traveling through Portland.

Alaska Airlines dominates key domestic routes from PDX, including flights to:

* Denver International Airport (DEN)
* Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
* Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
* Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
* Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)

The busiest international route from PDX is to Vancouver International Airport (YVR), served by both Alaska Airlines and Air Canada.

### Continued Expansion at PDX

Alaska Airlines is further expanding its services at PDX, adding two new year-round routes to Everett and Tri-Cities starting June 10th. Seasonal services are also planned for Baltimore, Idaho Falls, Jackson Hole, Philadelphia, and St. Louis, all launching by summer. These additions primarily focus on expanding connectivity within the Pacific Northwest.

### Portland International Airport: A Key Gateway

Portland International Airport (PDX) is the busiest airport in Oregon, handling over 90% of the state’s air travel and 95% of its air cargo. Located just nine miles from downtown Portland, PDX offers direct flights across the United States and international services to North America and Europe. Notably, PDX enforces fair retail pricing, preventing surge pricing at airport shops and restaurants.

In 2023, PDX served over 18 million passengers on more than 177,000 commercial flights. The airport features three runways:

* Runway 03/21: 6,000 feet (1,829 meters) – Asphalt
* Runway 10L/28R: 9,825 feet (2,995 meters) – Asphalt
* Runway 10R/28L: 11,000 feet (3,353 meters) – Concrete

PDX is served by a wide range of airlines, including Air Canada Express, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines. [Learn more about PDX](https://www.flypdx.com/).

This investment by Alaska Airlines is a clear indication of the airline’s long-term commitment to Portland and the Pacific Northwest, promising a brighter future for aviation in the region.
