Fear and Fury: A Family’s Nightmare at San Francisco International Airport
What began as a simple administrative error during a family vacation quickly spiraled into a terrifying ordeal for a Bay Area family. A viral video has sparked widespread outrage after showing a united airlines employee passenger confrontation where a staff member threatened to call immigration authorities on a family of four.
Julio Varela, a resident of San Ramon, described the harrowing experience of being targeted not because of legal status, but because of a ticketing dispute. The incident has left the family fearing for their safety and legal standing upon their return to the United States.
The Spark: A Simple Ticketing Error
The tension began on July 14 at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) ticketing counter. The Varela family was attempting to depart for Canada, but encountered a hurdle: a booking error had incorrectly listed the daughter’s middle name as her last name. Despite being advised by phone to arrive early to resolve the issue, the family spent nearly three hours waiting for a solution.
While a representative from a partner airline was close to fixing the error, a United Airlines employee intervened, abruptly dismissing the family with a lack of empathy. According to Varela, the employee stated, “I don’t care if you guys fly out today or not.”
Escalation: From Customer Service to ICE Threats
When Varela attempted to record the interaction to report the employee’s behavior, the situation escalated from poor service to a targeted attack. The viral footage captures the employee threatening to contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a moment that has since gone viral, the employee is heard saying: “Maybe we should call ICE on you.” When asked to repeat the statement, she added, “Maybe you need to be, because you don’t act like a citizen. Get away.”
Varela, a U.S. citizen, expressed his disbelief and anger over the encounter, noting that such threats are particularly damaging given the current political climate in the United States.
Allegations of Assault and Corporate Response
The confrontation didn’t end with words. Varela alleges that the employee physically assaulted him by hitting his hand and phone, causing the video to momentarily go dark.
Following the public outcry, several parties have weighed in:
- n
- United Airlines: Issued a brief statement claiming they are “looking into the interaction,” but provided no further details.
- The IAM Union: The employee’s union stated that the comments depicted in the video do not reflect the values of the organization and will be handled via collective bargaining processes.
- SFO Officials: Have remained silent despite requests for comment.
The Lingering Trauma
As the family prepared to fly back from Montreal to San Francisco, the emotional toll remained heavy. Varela expressed deep uncertainty and anxiety about whether they would be detained upon arrival, highlighting the real-world fear that emerges when authority figures weaponize immigration status during civil disputes.
