Urgent Search: RCMP Seek Public Help Following Amber Alert for Missing Children
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is urgently calling upon the public for assistance in locating two young children who remain missing. Despite an initial Amber Alert and extensive search efforts, six-year-old Lanakai Morrison and four-year-old Karl Morrison have not yet been found.
The Disappearance: What Happened?
The situation began on July 7, when Lanakai Morrison was taken from the hamlet of Valhalla Centre, located near Beaverlodge in northern Alberta’s Grande Prairie region. He was taken by his biological mother, 35-year-old Krista Morrison.
Police believe Lanakai is accompanied by his mother, her partner Daniel Ludwig, and their four-year-old son, Karl Morrison. Both adults are currently wanted by the RCMP for abduction in contravention of a custody and parenting order.
Tracking the Suspects: Vehicle Changes
Identifying the vehicle is crucial for the public to help. The suspects have been highly mobile, and police believe they have switched vehicles during their flight:
- Initial Vehicle: A 2015 Toyota Tundra (Alberta licence plate CTN9517). This vehicle has since been recovered by police.
- Current Suspected Vehicle: A 2006 Red Ford F350 with Alberta licence plate CXW8820, featuring a lift and larger tires.
- Alternative: Police warn that the group may have switched again to a motorhome.
Current Locations and Sightings
While the case started in Alberta, sightings have shifted toward British Columbia. There was a reported sighting in Ft. St. John, B.C., on July 8, though police were unable to locate them at the time. Recent indications suggest the group may have been in the south-central B.C. Okanagan Valley area near Vernon, potentially heading east toward the Kootenays.
Authorities warn that the group is very mobile and could currently be anywhere in northern B.C., the Yukon, or Alberta.
Physical Descriptions
To help identify the individuals, please note the following descriptions:
- Lanakai Morrison (6): Slight build, long brown hair, and brown eyes.
- Karl Morrison (4): Blonde hair.
- Krista Morrison (35): 5’8″ tall, medium build, long dark brown hair, and brown eyes.
- Daniel Ludwig (35): 5’11” tall, large build, brown eyes, and brown hair (may have a bald or shaved head).
Understanding the Amber Alert System
An Amber Alert is a vital emergency response system used to find abducted children. In Alberta, specific criteria must be met to activate an alert, including a confirmed abduction, a belief that the child is in danger, and enough descriptive information (suspects, vehicles, and directions) for the public to provide actionable help.
