How to Play and Important Deadlines
Powerball drawings are held three times a week – Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET. Monday drawings were added in 2021, giving players more chances to win. Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase your ticket, as deadlines vary by state! For example, New Jersey’s deadline is 9:59 p.m., while New York’s is 10:00 p.m. You can find a complete list of Powerball ticket deadline times by state.
Each ticket costs $2, and you can add the Power Play for an additional $1. The Power Play can multiply your winnings up to five times the original prize (excluding the jackpot and Match 5). A 10x Power Play is also possible when the jackpot is less than $150 million.
Understanding the Game
To play, select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. Or, let the lottery machine pick random numbers for you with a “Quick Pick” ticket. Prizes range from $4 for matching the Powerball to $1 million for matching all five white balls (except in California), with the grand prize awarded for matching all six numbers. You can check all prize payouts on the Powerball website.
Where to Buy Tickets
Powerball is available in 45 states, plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You can purchase tickets in person at gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores. Some airport terminals also sell lottery tickets.

Important Considerations
While playing the lottery can be exciting, remember to play responsibly. The odds of winning the jackpot are 292,201,338-to-1, and the odds of matching all five white balls are 11,688,053-to-1. Major lotteries offer both annuity and cash payout options. The annuity is paid out over time, while the cash option provides a lump sum payment.
Some states, like New Jersey, allow winners to remain anonymous. Check with your state lottery for specific rules and regulations.
