Controversy Hits Korn Ferry Tour Partner: Amateur Stripped of BMW Charity Pro-Am Title Over Cheating Scandal

The world of professional and amateur golf is no stranger to drama, but a recent scandal at the BMW Charity Pro-Am has sent shockwaves through the community. In a stunning turn of events, an amateur golfer has been stripped of his championship title after an investigation revealed a calculated effort to manipulate the game’s integrity.

The Fall of a Champion: The Josh Howell Scandal

Initially, the victory seemed straightforward. Josh Howell, partnering with Korn Ferry Tour professional David Kocher, dominated the 2026 BMW Charity Pro-Am Amateur X3 division, winning by a massive nine-shot margin. However, the triumph was short-lived.

The controversy ignited when X user Yip Strickler launched an investigation into Howell’s performance. Strickler alleged that Howell was engaging in sandbagging—the act of intentionally inflating a handicap to gain an unfair net-score advantage in competition.

How the Cheat Was Uncovered

The evidence was damning. While Howell registered for the event with a handicap of 5.0 via the Wyoming State Golf Club, Strickler discovered a second account under the name Joshua Howell at the Soldier Hollow Golf Club in Utah, boasting a much more competitive handicap of +0.9.

Following a thorough internal review, the BMW Charity Pro-Am confirmed the discrepancy. The result? Howell was immediately stripped of his title, as the nine-shot lead was clearly a product of an artificial advantage rather than skill alone.

Enter the Rightful Winner: Chris Harrison

With Howell removed from the standings, the tournament officials officially recognized Chris Harrison as the rightful champion of the X3 Division. Harrison, who paired up with Korn Ferry Tour pro Dylan Menante, finished with an impressive score of 18 under par.

“Integrity and sportsmanship will always be at the heart of the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX,” the organization stated in an official release. “Moving forward, we are implementing enhanced registration review procedures and additional handicap verification protocols to help ensure an equitable playing field.”

Understanding Sandbagging in Golf

For those unfamiliar with the term, sandbagging is considered one of the most egregious offenses in amateur golf. It occurs when a player:

    n

  • Inflates their handicap: Posting only poor rounds to raise their handicap index.
  • Manipulates scores: Intentionally playing poorly during rated rounds.
  • Uses multiple accounts: Maintaining different handicap records across various clubs to choose the one that offers the most advantage.

According to the USGA (United States Golf Association), the handicap system is designed to allow players of different abilities to compete fairly. When a player manipulates this system, they effectively steal the victory from honest competitors.

A History of Handicap Manipulation

This isn’t the first time the golf world has dealt with such deception. In 2023, NFL star Aaron Rodgers faced similar accusations of sandbagging at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Even further back, a legendary 1955 incident at the Deepdale Golf Club on Long Island saw two players scam a high-stakes Calcutta event, winning $4,000 by lying about their skill levels.

These recurring incidents highlight why the BMW Charity Pro-Am’s decision to tighten verification is so critical. As the stakes grow and the visibility of these events increases, the pressure to maintain the integrity of the game becomes paramount.
