Pete Carroll: A Legacy Defined by Passion and Perseverance
Few names are as synonymous with the Seattle Seahawks as Pete Carroll. For years, he led the franchise to unprecedented success, including two Super Bowl appearances and the team’s first and only championship. However, the Seahawks’ recent return to the Super Bowl comes with a notable absence: Carroll is no longer at the helm.
The End of an Era in Seattle
In 2024, the Seahawks and Pete Carroll “parted ways,” a move widely understood as a firing. While initially offered an advisory role, this never materialized. Carroll opted to take the 2024 NFL season off, leaving fans wondering about his future.
A Brief Stop in Las Vegas
Carroll’s retirement was short-lived. In January 2025, he was named the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting with former Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith via a significant trade. Unfortunately, the Raiders’ season was a disappointment, finishing with a 3-14 record, and Carroll was relieved of his duties after just one year.
Silence During the Seahawks’ Super Bowl Run
Throughout the Seahawks’ current Super Bowl run, Carroll has remained largely quiet. Veteran defensive tackle Jarran Reed, a key member of the “Legion of Boom” era, revealed he hadn’t heard from Carroll recently. “I haven’t heard from Pete in a minute,” Reed told Heavy Sports leading up to the Super Bowl.
A Lasting Connection to Seattle
Despite his departure, Carroll maintains a deep affection for Seattle. He has consistently spoken fondly of his time with the Seahawks, noting that his family still considers the city home.
“They were great years,” Carroll said in February 2025, according to Seahawks.com. “It’s still home to me.” He emphasized the incredible support of the “12s,” the Seahawks’ passionate fanbase, stating, “Taking that effort to Seattle, we were rewarded so extraordinarily… It was an unforgettable relationship, and I’m never going to lose connection with them.”
The Pain of Super Bowl XLIX
The Seahawks’ Super Bowl matchup against the New England Patriots is a painful reminder of Super Bowl XLIX, a game they lost in heartbreaking fashion. A controversial interception by Russell Wilson on the one-yard line, instead of handing the ball to Marshawn Lynch, remains a source of regret.
Carroll has repeatedly taken responsibility for the play call. “I would have done anything in my power to change that moment,” he admitted on the “Politickin’” podcast, with Marshawn Lynch also present. “But the moment happened too quickly… It had nothing to do with all the storylines about some other players or some other agenda… It happened so fast, and we got smacked in the frickin’ nuts by it.” He firmly maintains his accountability, stating, “I’m responsible for every call that was ever made.”
Looking Ahead
Pete Carroll’s journey in the NFL is a testament to his passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the game. While his time with the Raiders didn’t pan out as hoped, his legacy as a Seahawks legend remains secure. His future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Pete Carroll’s impact on the NFL will be felt for years to come.
