A shocking police operation has left local animal shelters facing an unprecedented crisis, and they need the community’s help immediately.
A Historic Rescue Operation
What started as a targeted law enforcement action ended in one of the largest animal seizures in the city’s history. During a drug trafficking warrant execution on Thursday night, officers discovered a staggering number of animals living in distress on a single property.
Brock Rowe, Director of Developmental Services, revealed the scale of the discovery: approximately 523 animals were confiscated. The operation was so extensive that animal control officers had to venture into nearby woods to retrieve animals that had fled during the chaos.
The Breakdown of Rescued Animals
The diversity of animals found at the scene was surprising, ranging from common household pets to exotic birds. The seizure included:
- 470 Birds (including peacocks)
- 49 Dogs
- Numerous Cats
- One Horse
Shelters at Breaking Point: An Urgent Call for Adoptions
With over 500 new arrivals, the city’s shelters are now severely over capacity. To make room for these rescued animals—who are currently held as evidence but require care—the city is launching a desperate plea for residents to adopt.
In an effort to clear space and find loving homes for existing shelter pets, Oklahoma City has implemented a “Name Your Price” adoption event. This means the community can decide the adoption fee, removing financial barriers to help these animals find forever homes.
“We are already over capacity on our dogs… We need the system to show up, come out and have some pets,” says Brock Rowe.
