Whitney Leavitt Steps into the Spotlight on Broadway in ‘Chicago’

The long-running, Tony-winning revival of Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre welcomes a fresh face to the cellblock: Whitney Leavitt. Known to audiences for her role in Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and as a semi-finalist on Dancing With the Stars, Leavitt is making her highly anticipated Broadway debut as Roxie Hart, beginning February 2nd.

Leavitt’s limited engagement will run through March 15th, offering audiences a chance to see the Utah-based actress and mother of three bring her unique energy to the iconic role. She’s already garnered a significant following online, boasting over four million followers across various platforms, captivated by her dance videos, family-focused comedy, and lifestyle content. This digital presence is sure to draw a new audience to the Broadway classic.

New Faces and Returning Favorites

Alongside Leavitt, Chicago is also welcoming Mykal Kilgore (billed as M. Kilgore) as Mary Sunshine. Kilgore’s Broadway credits include Motown the Musical, Hair, and The Book of Mormon. Greg Hildreth returns as Amos Hart, alongside ensemble members Tia Altinay and Chelsea James. Joining the ensemble are Austin Dunn, Danielle Marie Gonzalez, Christopher Kelley, and Jeff Sullivan.

The production continues to shine with Sophie Carmen-Jones as Velma Kelly, Tam Mutu as Billy Flynn, and Jacqueline B. Arnold as Matron “Mama” Morton.

A Broadway Legacy

Chicago, currently celebrating its 29th anniversary on Broadway, boasts a remarkable history. It originated as one of the annual Encores! presentations at City Center before opening at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1996. After transfers to the Shubert Theatre and finally settling at the Ambassador Theatre in 2003, it has become a Broadway institution.

With performances in 36 countries and over 33 million viewers worldwide, Chicago is now the second-longest-running show in Broadway history, only surpassed by the recently closed The Phantom of the Opera. You can learn more about the show’s history and evolution here.

The Creative Team

Chicago features a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Ebb. The production is directed by Walter Bobbie, with choreography by the late Ann Reinking. The design team includes John Lee Beatty (set design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Ken Billington (lighting design), and Scott Lehrer (sound design). Casting is by ARC.

The current production, produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997.
