Varennes Expands Inclusive Living: New 35-Unit Affordable Housing Project Launched
The community of Varennes is taking a significant step forward in ensuring accessible and dignified living for its most vulnerable citizens. In a powerful collaboration between the Government of Quebec, Desjardins, the City of Varennes, and the Office régional d’habitation (ORH) de Marguerite-D’Youville, work has officially begun on a new affordable housing complex.
This initiative, part of the Desjardins Affordable Housing Initiative, is more than just a construction project; it is a commitment to social inclusivity and quality of life within the region.
Modern Facilities Designed for Accessibility
Located at 2014, boulevard René-Gaultier, the upcoming five-story building is meticulously designed to meet the needs of its future residents. The complex will offer a variety of living arrangements to accommodate different needs:
- 30 one-bedroom apartments for individuals or couples.
- 4 two-bedroom apartments for those requiring more space.
- 1 studio unit for compact, efficient living.
To ensure total inclusivity, all units will be fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. The building will be equipped with modern safety and convenience features, including a high-speed elevator, integrated sprinkler systems, and dedicated parking spaces.
Who Will Benefit from This Project?
The project specifically targets demographics that often face challenges in the current real estate market. The apartments are reserved for:
- Single individuals or couples aged 60 and over.
- Persons living with an intellectual disability.
Beyond basic shelter, the facility aims to foster community. Future residents will have access to a community room and dedicated social spaces designed to prevent isolation and promote a high quality of life.
A Major Financial Investment in the Community
Bringing this vision to life requires a substantial investment, totaling approximately $17 million. The financial structure demonstrates a strong public-private partnership:
- Government of Quebec: A contribution of $6.6 million.
- City of Varennes: An investment of $3.4 million (which includes the donation of the land).
- Desjardins: A mortgage loan of $6.8 million.
To further ensure affordability, eligible households will be able to access the Programme de supplément au loyer Québec, which helps reduce monthly rental costs.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The excitement is building as the community awaits the completion of the project. Residents are expected to move in by Spring 2027. Once completed, the ORH de Marguerite-D’Youville will take over the long-term management of the building, ensuring a stable and supportive environment for all.
