
Air Liquide Fuels the AI Revolution: New Strategic Partnership with SK hynix for HBM Technology
The global race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) supremacy isn’t just about software and algorithms; it’s about the physical infrastructure and materials that make high-speed computing possible. In a move that underscores this reality, Air Liquide, a global leader in gases, technologies, and services for Industry and Health, has announced a landmark long-term contract with SK hynix.
A Strategic Investment in the Future of AI
Air Liquide is committing nearly EUR 200 million to support SK hynix’s ambitious industrial project focused on the advanced packaging of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). This investment is a pivotal step in enhancing the production capabilities of one of the world’s most critical components for AI development.
The project will center around the new packaging and testing facility, known as “P&T7,” located in Cheongju, South Korea. To meet the rigorous demands of this fab, Air Liquide will design, build, and operate a state-of-the-art nitrogen production unit.
Why HBM Chips Matter for AI
For those unfamiliar, High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is a specialized RAM interface that allows for significantly faster data transfer speeds compared to traditional memory. This is essential for AI accelerators and GPUs that process massive datasets in real-time.
By the time operations begin in late 2027, Air Liquide’s facility will provide:

- Ultra-high purity nitrogen: Essential for maintaining a contaminant-free environment during chip fabrication.
- High-purity compressed air: Necessary for the precision machinery used in advanced packaging.
- Proprietary carrier gas technologies: Ensuring the highest standards of purity and stability.
Expanding the Footprint: The Role of DIG Airgas
This expansion is not a coincidence. The partnership follows Air Liquide’s strategic acquisition of DIG Airgas earlier this year. By integrating DIG Airgas’s established local presence and customer relationships in the Asia-Pacific region with Air Liquide’s global innovation, the company is accelerating its growth in the semiconductor sector.
