A Historic Turn of Events at Circuit de la Sarthe
The atmosphere at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours has reached a fever pitch. In a stunning twist of fate during the Hyperpole sessions, BMW has secured its first-ever pole position, marking a milestone moment for the Bavarian manufacturer in one of the world’s most prestigious endurance races.
Dries Vanthoor, piloting the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 for the factory WRT team, delivered a masterclass in precision, clocking a blistering time of 3m22.564s. This performance puts BMW at the forefront of the grid, setting the stage for an epic battle of endurance and speed.
Drama in the Fast Lane: How Cadillac Lost the Lead
The path to the top spot wasn’t without controversy. Initially, it appeared that Cadillac had snatched the glory. Jack Aitken, driving the #38 car, had narrowly beaten Vanthoor by a razor-thin margin of just 0.005 seconds. However, the celebrations were short-lived.
Race directors intervened after Aitken failed to follow critical instructions, leaving the working lane to join the fast lane before receiving authorization. As a result of this procedural error, Aitken’s fastest lap was deleted, and the #38 Cadillac was demoted to a disappointing 10th place on the grid.
The Hypercar Grid: Where Do the Giants Stand?
With BMW leading the charge, the rest of the Hypercar field is tightly packed and ready for war. Here is how the top contenders are lining up:
- n
- 2nd Place: The #12 Jota Cadillac V-Series.R, driven by Will Stevens.
- 3rd Place: Alpine, making a poignant final appearance at Le Mans.
- Mid-Grid: The highest-placed Ferrari (#51 499P) will start in 8th.
- Rear Guard: The two Toyota TR010 Hybrids will start from 9th and 10th.
LMP2 and LMGT3: More Surprises and Speed
The drama extended beyond the Hypercars. In the LMP2 class, the #19 IDEC Sport Oreca 07 has claimed the lead after the original pole-sitter, the #29 Forestier by Panis car, was demoted for impeding another competitor during qualifying.
Meanwhile, in the LMGT3 class, the #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3, driven by Mattia Druddi, secured a commanding pole position, proving that the GT3 battle will be just as intense as the prototypes.
