Ticket Master Monopoly: Former DOJ Attorneys Reveal Shocking Betrayal in Live Nation Case

The battle over the dominance of the ticketing industry has taken a dramatic turn. For years, fans and artists have complained about the pricing and availability of tickets, but a new controversy has emerged behind the scenes of the legal battle against Ticket Master and Live Nation.

Two former top antitrust attorneys from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), who were central to the case against the entertainment giant, have come forward with scathing revelations. They allege that a critical case to break up the Ticket Master monopoly was sabotaged by high-level political interference.

A Sudden Settlement That Left Everyone Blindsided

The case, spearheaded during the Biden Administration, accused Live Nation and Ticket Master of employing monopolistic business practices to stifle competition. However, just one week after the trial began in March, the DOJ abruptly reached a settlement with the company.

David Dahlquist, the former Deputy Director of Litigation who led the case, expressed his disbelief during the National Independent Venue Association’s annual conference in Minneapolis. He stated:

“When I stood up and gave the opening statement in this case, I believed that we were going to win… I knew the case, I knew the witnesses, I knew the evidence.”

The settlement was reached in closed-door meetings, leaving the presiding judge, Arun Subramanian, absolutely blindsided. The judge criticized the conduct of the parties involved, stating it “strains the bounds of responsible conduct.”

The Fallout: Political Lobbying and Secret Deals

One of the most explosive claims comes from attorney Alford, a Republican who alleges he was fired from the DOJ in July 2025 for resisting “inappropriate lobbying.” According to Alford, the settlement wasn’t based on legal merit but on political pressure.

  • Excluded Teams: Dahlquist confirmed that he and his trial team were completely shut out of the negotiations.
  • Political Interference: Reports suggest that high-ranking officials, and potentially former President Trump, may have personally intervened to protect the company.
  • Selective Prosecution: Alford warned that the “selective non-prosecution of political allies” leads to market collusion and further monopoly abuses.

Can the Ticketing Market Be Saved?

Despite the DOJ’s sudden retreat, the fight didn’t end there. Twenty-seven states decided to move forward with the suit independently. In April, a jury reached a landmark conclusion: Live Nation and Ticket Master hold an illegal monopoly over the U.S. ticketing market.

Industry experts argue that the 2010 merger between the two entities was a flawed proposition from the start. For 16 years, promises of compliance have failed to fix a broken system that continues to penalize the consumer.

What Happens Next?

The music and live events industry now waits with bated breath. Judge Subramanian has yet to decide on the specific remedies or structural changes required to dismantle the illegal monopoly. Whether the company will be forced to split or face unprecedented fines remains to be seen, but the revelations from former DOJ insiders have cast a dark shadow over the legal process.
