Alaska Air’s Global Ambitions: Deepening Ties with American Airlines for International Growth

Alaska Air is no longer just a dominant force on the West Coast; it is officially transforming into a global player. To fuel this ambitious transition, the Seattle-based carrier is strategically moving to deepen its partnership with American Airlines, eyeing a future that could include a powerful joint venture to solidify its international footprint.

A Strategic Leap Toward Global Connectivity

During the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Alex Judson, Managing Director of Partnerships and International at Alaska, highlighted that the airline has entered a new stage of evolution. Now that Alaska operates as a global carrier, the focus has shifted toward high-level partnerships that can accelerate growth.

CEO Ben Minicucci has been clear about the vision: the goal is to ensure Alaska is as successful as possible as it launches more global flights. Since Alaska is already a member of the Oneworld alliance and maintains a close codeshare relationship with American Airlines, a formal joint venture is the logical next step.

Potential Joint Ventures on the Horizon

American Airlines currently manages several successful joint businesses that could serve as a blueprint for Alaska Air. Depending on regulatory approval and antitrust clearances, Alaska could potentially integrate into operations involving:

    n

  • Europe-US Markets: Partnering with British Airways, Finnair, and Iberia.
  • Australia-US Markets: Collaborating with Qantas Airways.
  • Japan-US Markets: Working alongside Japan Airlines.

Currently, Alaska already serves key international destinations such as London, Rome, Sydney, Osaka, and Tokyo, with Seattle and Honolulu acting as the primary intercontinental gateways. According to data from Cirium, these routes are critical to the airline’s strategy to capture more long-haul traffic.

Filling the Gap: The Search for a Latin American Partner

While the focus is heavily on the North Atlantic and Pacific, Alaska Air is also addressing a significant void in its network. Following the end of its long-term relationship with LATAM Airlines, the carrier currently lacks a partner that provides comprehensive connectivity within Latin America.

“Stay tuned,” Judson teased when asked about the airline’s plans for the region, acknowledging that the end of the LATAM tie-up left a strategic gap. With American Airlines holding equity partnerships with JetSmart in Chile and Gol in Brazil, there is a strong possibility that Alaska will leverage its relationship with American to regain a foothold in the Latin American market.

What This Means for Travelers

For passengers, this evolution means more seamless connections, expanded loyalty benefits through the Oneworld network, and a wider array of international destinations accessible from the US West Coast. As Alaska Air continues to scale, the synergy between it and American Airlines will likely redefine how travelers move between North America and the rest of the world.
