Doc Rivers Declares Joel Embiid the Most Talented Player He’s Ever Coached

Doc Rivers Hails Joel Embiid as a Generational Talent

Former Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers recently shared high praise for Joel Embiid, boldly stating that the star center is the most talented player he has ever coached. This declaration came ahead of a matchup between Rivers’ current team and Embiid’s 76ers, a game notably played without Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo.

While Rivers’ tenure with the 76ers didn’t result in an Eastern Conference Finals appearance, he had a front-row seat to some of Embiid’s most impressive seasons, including the 2023 MVP award. Rivers reflected on witnessing Embiid return to form after battling injuries, emphasizing the sheer skill set the big man possesses.

“Groundhog Day” and Unfulfilled Potential

“You know, it’s funny, it’s like Groundhog Day, you know, it really is,” Rivers remarked. “I was telling a very, very, very Hall of Fame player that I coached that Joel is the most talented player that I ever coached. And he was like, ‘What?’ And I was like, ‘He is, you know, it’s the things that you guys see and then the things you actually don’t see in practice sometimes that he can do. It’s incredible, it really is.’”

Rivers also lamented the consistent injury issues that have plagued Embiid during his playoff runs. “Unfortunately for me, I never had him healthy once in the playoffs. He wasn’t healthy last year; he wasn’t healthy the year before. You know, that’s five years straight, I think. And if he ever gets to the playoffs healthy, especially with, they’ve added some big pieces here. They’re gonna be a dangerous team, but it’s all gonna come down to that. And nothing’s changed.”

Embiid’s Resurgence and Impact on the 76ers

This season, Embiid has appeared in 26 games, already surpassing his total from the previous season. He’s averaging an impressive 25.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists while shooting .486/.280/.855. His ability to thrive in Nick Nurse’s fast-paced offense, designed to maximize Tyrese Maxey’s speed, has been crucial to the 76ers’ success.

The contributions of rebound-focused players like Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker have also alleviated some of the pressure on Embiid, allowing him to play at an All-Star level. His strong performance has even put him in contention as a potential injury replacement for Antetokounmpo at the upcoming All-Star game in Los Angeles.
