A Defiance of Death: The Miraculous Survival of Dawa Sherpa
In the brutal, oxygen-depleted reaches of Mount Everest, survival is often a matter of seconds and luck. Dawa had paused for a brief rest with his backpack, assuring Thrall he was fine and urging him to continue descending. Six Days Against All Odds
For six days, hope dwindled. The air at 7,500 metres is too thin to sustain human life for long, and the freezing temperatures make hypothermia an immediate threat. Dawa’s family had already begun to mourn; his wife had even offered last rite prayers for his soul.
Then, the unthinkable happened. A cleaning crew spotted a figure slowly sliding down the mountain toward Base Camp. It was Dawa Sherpa. Despite suffering from frostbite on his hands, he was found to be in remarkably good health and conscious.
“Dawa managed to survive against all odds for days. It’s nothing short of a miracle,” stated Pemba Sherpa, executive director of 8K Expeditions. “This is a true self-rescue.”
The Path to Recovery
Experts believe Dawa’s survival was aided by his experience and his ability to find shelter in abandoned tents to preserve body heat. He was eventually airlifted to safety and transported to the HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu.
