Syracuse Braces for Major Winter Storm: Up to 18 Inches of Snow Expected
Syracuse, N.Y. – Residents of Syracuse are being urged to prepare for a significant winter storm expected to bring heavy snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures beginning Sunday. A snow safety alert was issued Friday night as forecasters predict 12 to 18 inches of snow between Sunday and Monday, accompanied by extreme cold and wind chill temperatures plummeting to 15 to 25 degrees below zero.
Impact on Commute & Road Conditions
The Syracuse Department of Public Works (DPW) warns that Monday’s commute is likely to be severely impacted as crews work tirelessly to clear roads. The DPW’s initial focus will be on clearing high-volume roads, emergency routes, and hills to ensure access for emergency vehicles. Neighborhood side streets will be addressed once major routes are passable and snowfall begins to subside.
City officials strongly advise residents to limit travel if possible. Strict enforcement of alternate side parking regulations will be in effect to facilitate efficient snow removal. Vehicles violating parking rules will be ticketed and towed without warning.
Safety Reminders for Residents
- Sidewalks & Hydrants: Property owners are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to their properties and ensuring a clear path around fire hydrants. The Syracuse Fire Department requests a three-foot clearance around hydrants.
- Priority Streets: Parking enforcement will be concentrated on designated priority streets in the Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, and Southwest neighborhoods, where narrow roadways and on-street parking pose challenges for plowing.
- Downtown Restrictions: Seasonal odd-even parking restrictions will be enforced on several downtown blocks, including portions of Erie Boulevard East, East Water Street, South Warren Street, Montgomery Street, Madison Street, and East and West Jefferson streets. Be sure to check posted signage for specific hours and restrictions.
Stay Informed & Track Plow Progress
Residents can monitor the progress of snow removal efforts using the city’s live snow plow map (replace # with actual link). Snow-related concerns can be reported to Cityline via the SYRCityline app or by calling 315-448-CITY (2489). In emergency situations, dial 911.
